The Plot Chickens

The cutest book for teaching plot!
I used this book to introduce the concept of plot writing to a young student I tutor. We were cracking up, but we definitely got the idea. Highly recommend it for teaching about plot in reading or writing in the primary grades. Adults and older kids will love reading it to the younger kids because of some humor that is meant for us hidden in the book.

Very funny!
I read my students this book for writers workshop. They loved it! Definitely opens the door to discuss what elements they should include to write an interesting story.

A chicken can teach kids how to write!
Teaching writing is no easy feat. But if Henrietta can, so can fourth graders! I stumbled across this book and checked it out from the library. We are about to take the state standardized test for writing in fourth grade and believe me you, the people that make up the criteria for these tests have no idea what children should be expected to do as writers. Henrietta tells kids about the rules she has learned in order to write her own book. With the help of her aunts, who are a little bit off their rocker, Henrietta provides examples and non examples of what the rules for writing look like. My fourth graders enjoyed this book very much the first time I read it to them and we talked about the rules Henrietta wrote by in an informal, "oh no she's talking about the test again", manner. When I told the class we would be reading it again they were so excited and we created posters with each of the rules Henrietta uses, we looked at our own writing to spot if we were using these rules to be as "cool" as Henrietta and now, we take the advise a cool chicken has given us and it is working better than anything we have tried previously. If you are a teacher or if you are a parent that wants to get their child excited about writing, this book is a must have. My kids love the crazy aunt that says "The End. Good story!"

Great Writing Mentor Text
The Plot Chickens is a cleverly written book about writing a story. This punny book follows Henrietta, a chicken and avid reader who has read all of the books on the farm. She ventures out to the local library. There, she finds a book about writing and decides she will write her own book. Despite her hard work and perseverance, her book does not become an instant best seller. However, she does develop a loyal fan base. I love that this book provides young authors a lot of great writing tips to improve their stories. It also sheds light on the writing process and steps taken to publish a book. This would be a great addition to your writing mentor text collection!

Creative writing intro for children
This cute book introduces the child to creative writing in a manner that resulted in my granddaughter starting to write her own stories.I purchased this for the home library after it had been borrowed from a lending library do to it’s seeming to meet high standards for education, motivation for writing, enjoyable to adults and child alike.

Young Writers are Going to Love This One!
Oh My Gosh! I knew this book sounded delightful before I bought it for my granddaughter - but until I saw it in person, I had no idea how great it really is! I started looking through the book when it came, and had to read the whole story right then. It is clevery written, and so much fun to read! A chicken announces she is going to write a book, and everybody wants to be the star. A lot of clucking going on in that henhouse as advice is coming from everywhere. Meanwhile, a young reader / writer is informed about what every story needs - from the plot to the publication. I bought this because my 7-year-old granddaughter is stapling papers together and creating her own stories, complete with illustrations. The book is a gift, so she has not seen it yet. But I KNOW she is going to love it.
