Q: Why are there no crystals in the lid / friends one had?

Hi Buyer, Sorry that we don't sell the crystal type now. You can buy the normal version first, and if we sell again in the future you can quickly find our store and buy a crystal type.

Just pull off the little round disc that covers it

I don't know, I have the pink one and it doesn't have the crystals

Q: how do i insert the fragrant pieces supplied please?

I haven't actually inserted mine but just now I found that you can lift off the round plastic cover (not the side with the writing on) if you carefully use your finger nail. So I assume then you can insert the fragrant piece and then pop the plastic round cover back on. Please let me know if this works - good luck. Jackie
