The James Stewart Hollywood Legend Collection [DVD]

James Stewart, with his air of mild confusion and utter decency, was a heart throb for decades. He was certainly one of mine. These films are all worth watching, not a dud amongst them. They come from the age of the Hollywood superstar, where the towering presence of the star makes the whole thing worthwhile (or not, as the case may be).Destry Rides Again was Stewart's first Western, with a classic story of establishing law and order in a frontier town. It was made in 1939, before I was born, amazingly. It has been chosen by the Library of Congress as part of the National Film Library. It established Stewart as a star, before World War 2 intervened and he went into the American Air Force and became a real-life war hero.Winchester 73 is another Western (made after the war, in 1950). Stewart played a vigilante pursuing an outlaw into Dodge City, where he encounters Wyatt Earp. It is a black and white film. For me, it isn't the best of the bunch, but it is quite enjoyable.Rear Window, of course, is a wonderful Hitchcock movie. I could watch it over and over. Stewart really does dominate this film, giving a marvellous performance, while Grace Kelly looks elegant and utterly beautiful and delivers her lines.Vertigo is another great classic, the first film to give me a real insight into the adult world, when I was in my early teens. It is marvellous.Harvey, made in 1950, is equally famous, a wry comedy about an invisible rabbit. Brilliant!This is a really enjoyable collection, which has been digitally remastered and plays pretty well, so long as one doesn't mind that some are in black and white.

Great actor, great movie collection and great price.Not much more that you can say except that the films stand the test of time, in fact would love to see what the writers, actors and directors could do with todays budgets, technology and choice of locations.Even for just Harvey (why I bought this) its a good deal

These movies were a mothers day gift, so as far as I could see these movies were of great quality, I have not had negative feedback.

Great films and great acting. So uncool today I think!

After It's a Wonderful Life, Harvey is my favourite James Stewart film. Stewart's acting in Rear Window was superbly powerful. Destry is a good film. Must admit I didn't finish Vertigo, it was getting late, I was tired and I never went back to it.

A good set of James Stewart's films.
