Learning faster than i expected!
Learning a new language as an adult is difficult. Rosetta Stone unfortunately does not offer this language so i decided to purchase the book and it’s very helpful! It also pairs with an online course if you want, but i don’t feel the need for that yet since this book is so thorough.

Probably the best course for learning the Macedonian language
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I am currently an American volunteer in the Republic of Macedonia, and I purchased this book about 4 months before I started my service in order to prepare myself for speaking the language. After living in the RoM for almost a year, I can say that my understanding of the language would be much more basic if it were not for this book. The other reviews are correct in mentioning that this book does not simplify too much the approach to learning the language. The authors took great care in creating a system for grammar instruction, exercises, and vocabulary lists, and the consistency in the organization of the book hastens the learning process (for example, the authors generate and utilize a simple style of introducing the vocabulary of verbs with the perfective and imperfective forms within each chapter, a part of the language that could be confusing otherwise). The readings and exercises are also very sophisticated, allowing the student to apply the grammar and vocabulary with logic and creativity. My only criticisms to this book is that they do not teach the student HOW to write the cyrillic alphabet (I once studied Japanese, so I am used to stroke order. Since the book did not teach how to write the Macedonian cyrillic alphabet, I had to learn how to write the cursive version from Wikipedia). Also, the order of the vocabulary is too segmented into themes, so students will learn complex vocabulary in the first few chapters, while lacking the ability to say simple words in Macedonian, like colors or rooms of a house, until later points in the book. However, these are minor criticisms, and they do not detract from the effectiveness of this book. I can say that I understand some of the logic of the grammar better than some host country nationals because this book taught me well enough.

An excellent textbook
This review is written from the perspective of the solo learner, not from someone using the book for a university class. This is really quite a good language textbook. Unlike many modern language textbooks, it is not "dumbed-down" with pictures and cartoons and silly games, which serve only to take up space. It contains lots of good practical exercises, reading material, dialogues, and clear grammatical explanations. Even more importantly, there are answers for the exercises. I am always amazed by the number of language textbooks published without answers for the exercises. Also, the reader is immediately introduced to Macedonian Cyrillic, with no fooling around with some distracting Latin alphabet transcription system. If you can't bother to learn the alphabet (which is very simple), you're certainly not going to be able to learn the language. There are sixteen lessons, and they can be done at the pace of about a lesson per week if you spend an hour or two a day doing the work and learning the vocabulary. It also has a comprehensive two-way glossary, which is important since there are no good Macedonian/English dictionaries in print in the US--you have to order them from Macedonia, which takes a while. On finishing the book, a solo learner should have a good basic understanding of the language and the ability to continue reading native source material and developing his or her vocabulary. Unfortunately, you can't learn to speak a language from a textbook, and the audio material accompanying the textbook is quite inadequate. I know of no good source for simplified Macedonian audio material or audio exercises to improve listening comprehension, or spoken grammatical drills. Of course, there is native audio material available on the internet, but learning from unsimplified native material is quite difficult when you're starting out. What you need is *comprehensible* input, to borrow Krashen's phrase.

It is a nice book to start learning Macedonian
It is a nice book to start learning Macedonian. It would be better to learn together with the Audio book. Pronounciation is the tricky part. I am grateful for having my Macedonian friends to teach me for the pronounciation. Anyway, Macedonian is an awesome language to learn. Have fun :)

Best results I’ve ever had learning a language
Every Macedonian wanted to know how I learned their language so fast. Here’s how^Seriously. I’ve taken so many language courses and read so many teach-yourself language books over the years- that’s my thing. These authors are masters of the craft.

Too expensive.
The book is very big but the exercises are very childish and repetitive. It's ok book but too expensive for what is inside. At the moment i am at unit 6 and i still haven't find usual conversation things for daily life:like pharmacy or doctor visit...or travel or how to ask directions. It's a fantasy book. Nothing special.

Great language textbook
Probably the best book on such an obscure Slavic language. I have a native Macedonian speaker in my family, so it was great to sit down with her and flip through the book. I highly recommend for someone seriously committed to learning the language or visiting the country.

многу добро Very good
It is the most comprehensive course book for Macedonian I know. There are not many books about Macedonian on the market and this one is by far the best because there is a lot of vocabulary in the units and exercises and the explanations are good. I use it without a teacher and get along very well with it. It's worth the money I spent.A tip for future users: The tracks on the CD are not marked in the book as 'CD x track xy', they are just marked with a music note. So you maybe want to mark them before you start otherwise you have to search for it during your exercise.I definitely recommend it!
