A Captivating Journey through History and Family Heritage
"Henry's Children and Other Stories" by Denise D'Angelo takes readers on a fascinating exploration of family history and the legacy of the Zapf family lineage. Through a collection of meticulously documented stories and research, D'Angelo weaves together the narratives of multiple generations, capturing the essence of the Zapf family's experiences and their connection to the town of Mendota, Illinois. The book begins with a heartfelt tribute to the family historian, Shirley Conner Baxter, whose passion for genealogy and family history profoundly impacted subsequent generations. As the torchbearer of the Zapf family's rich heritage, Baxter meticulously chronicled the lives of her ancestors, building upon the invaluable work of her predecessor, Hilda Dorathea Zapf. D'Angelo skillfully incorporates the writings and diaries left behind by Hilda, Shirley, Claire Zapf Segall, and Henry Zapf himself, offering readers a firsthand account of the family's journey. One of the book's strengths lies in its ability to transport readers back in time, delving into the origins of the Zapf family in Beikheim, Bavaria, and their subsequent immigration to America in the 1880s. D'Angelo sheds light on the challenges faced by German immigrants during this period, providing insight into their choice of Mendota, Illinois, as their new home and the hardships they encountered upon arrival. The author's diligent research allows readers to understand the circumstances that shaped the lives of Henry Zapf, his brother Veit, and their families, including a vivid account of the devastating cyclone of 1890 that ravaged the region.Throughout the book, D'Angelo paints a vivid picture of the Zapf family's values and traditions. One notable quality that resonates throughout the narrative is acceptance. The family's ability to embrace diversity, setting aside political and religious differences, is a testament to their unwavering love and support for one another. These timeless values create a warm and inclusive atmosphere that makes readers feel like honored guests in the family's home.D'Angelo's writing style is engaging and evocative, transporting readers to the kitchen gatherings on Indiana Avenue or the campfires at Walker's Woods, where cherished memories were shared. The author pays homage to the expressive storytelling abilities of family members such as Hilda Dorathea Zapf, Claire Zapf Segall, and Red Rogers, whose captivating tales of the olden days in Mendota bring the past to life. The inclusion of personal anecdotes, like the daring escapades of Uncle Red Rogers, adds a touch of charm and humor to the overall narrative. The book's organization, as reflected in the table of contents, allows readers to easily navigate the various chapters. From Henry's early years in Beikheim to the legacy he left behind, each section provides a distinct glimpse into the family's journey through time. The inclusion of photographs and illustrations adds a visual element that enhances the storytelling experience."Henry's Children and Other Stories" is a testament to the importance of preserving family history and passing down cherished memories to future generations. Henry Zapf’s great-granddaughter, Denise D’Angelo Jones has done a remarkable job compiling and presenting this captivating collection. GREAT BOOK About LIFE for GERMAN IMMIGRANT FAMILY in Midwest!
Love this book! Grateful to be reading about these amazing people that I happened to have also known first hand. America was shaped by men like HENRY who risked it all in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The delightful stories of his 9 children and their lives growing up in the victorian era in America are just delicious. Think LITTLE WOMEN time 7.plus 2 boys... so fun. I will be getting many copies and sharing.

A Multigenerational Memoir
A remarkable compilation of the history of a family, cleverly incorporating the perspectives of several generations who told or were told the cherished stories that have been passed from one to the next. With treasured "real time" accounts provided by letters and diaries and personal interactions, the romance of times gone by is given authenticity and avoids being overly sentimental. Henry, his children, and grandchildren may be very proud indeed!
