The Housemaid's Secret

A good story
A very intriguing story that kept me reading to the end and I must admit I didn't see the twist. That came as quite a surprise. I found Millie an appealing heroine with a kind heart and yet feisty. Recommended reading for those who enjoy mysteries.

Exciting read that is fast paced throughout
This is the 2nd in a trilogy. I had read the first and enjoyed it so was looking forward to the second. This author has written more than 20 novels so, if they carry on being good, then I'd got lots of reading to do.This was first published in 2023. The book has 327 pages split into 74 chapters. This is written in the first person and gives a conspiratorial edge to the narrative which is a delight to read. The narrators (there are two) are always trying to hide something from someone and it's great being the reader as we usually know what is going on.It's useful to have read the first book but not essential as the author gradually reveals Millie's secrets as the story goes on.This author has a confidence which shines through her writing and I felt I was in safe hands. Of course, the plot is ridiculous but that doesn't matter as this is delicious fun.The twists and turns are cleverly written. Unusually for a novel, none of the characters are particularly likeable but that adds to the enjoyment. The book is a fast paced read which speeds up towards the end. It's great fun but won't stay in my head for long. There is some violence but it is controlled and appropriate, making this an exciting read.

Easy and engaging read
Not as good as the first book but still a quick and exciting read. Off to read the next book.

Easy, disposable fiction.
This is an easy read. Short chapters, not a bad plot - but the twists aren't shocking, you can see them coming to be honest. This does not have the surprise impact of its predecessor, "The Housemaid".The main characters remain fairly shallow, which isn't a total criticism. The book is not lengthy and I guess that expanding the characters would slow the pace somewhat. This isn't a deep and meaningful novel by any means. It's an easy sort of holiday read, it's not complicated, no concentration required. It's not one I'll remember terribly well in the coming months.
