Singer, songwriter, actor, and social activist best describes the life and career of Harry Belafonte who during the mid-Fifties became the charting King of Calypso as well as a popular movie star in CARMEN JONES, ISLAND IN THE SUN and ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW. Now in his late Eighties, this excellent compilation of US/UK hit singles and a few popular album selections, is the perfect way to recall Harry’s successful run prior to his decision to support and address serious social issues. In fact, such pop gems as BANANA BOAT SONG, JAMAICA FAREWELL, MAMA LOOKA BOO-BOO, SCARLET RIBBONS, ISLAND IN THE SUN and the seasonal MARY’S BOY CHILD still sound as fresh and original as they did when they occupied high positions in the Charts with those songs sporting calypso rhythms recalling warmer climes during UK’s wet winter chill. Along with the album tracks - some of which also charted as singles - UNCHAINED MELODY, DON’T EVER LEAVE ME (a.k.a. YELLOW BIRD), MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and HOLE IN MY BUCKET are among enjoyable recordings on a compilation which stands out amongst the plethora of Belafonte reissues currently available.

Very poor quality sound.

Bought this for my husband. He wanted the soundtrack from Beetlejuice because of the 2 Harry Belafonte songs, and when I couldn't find the soundtrack, I decided to try this CD, it only has one of the songs, so I found another CD that has both songs. We've listened to both and are pleased with both.

This Cd of Harry Belafonte is in my opinion one of the best I have heard that is whyI am not returning it if I could give it more than 5 stars I would it worth putting in anyones collection .Morris

It is good early Belafonte. Nothing bad.
