AniMed Methenamine Pure Multi-Species Pet Supplement, 16-Ounce

I don’t write many reviews. But I felt I really needed to review this product for long time UTI sufferers. Yes! this product is for horses, but a good friend of mine who is a doctor says most horse meds are the same medicine as human. You just have to figure out the right dose. Well hiprex (requires RX) is for humans (which is methenamine) and the dosage is .5g - 1g up to twice a day. Also, If you’ve ever taken cystex plus for a uti, it has a small amount of methenamine in it. Likely the highest amount that can be put in a drug OTC. It’s not enough to keep a uti away (it curbs it a bit) but it’s expensive and has pain reliever it which just masks the problem.Anyway, I was at my wits end suffering Uti after uti with my current boyfriend. My UTIs are always caused by sex and yes I do allll the right things. But I’m no stranger to Utis. I’ve had them since I started having sex which was 20 years ago. Condoms help a good bit to keep utis less frequent but for me once the condom comes off, I have entered UTI hell. I start getting UTIs and they never stop. I’ve had them so bad the only thing that will knock it out is a shot of rocephin. I’ve definitely built of resistance to antibiotics and that’s what lead me here. I’ve tried everything and when I say everything… I do mean everything. Alll the supplements. Alll the tricks. But I hadn’t tried this yet. After reading some promising reviews I decided it was worth a shot. I had just come off of my 3rd round of anabiotic’s in a two month period. I would always get relief from taking the antibiotics but within less than a week of getting off of them… The UTI was back and with a vengeance. So 3 weeks ago I put the methenamine powder ( which YES smells AWFUL) into 00 gel caps. Pretty easy to do. My caps contain anywhere from .5-.7g and I take them once a day and and extra one on days I have sex. This is lower than the recommended dose of hipprex but I figured I’d start slow. I don’t know why I’m saving this for last, but I’ve been UTI free for 3 weeks now. And trust me when I say I’ve had the kind of sex in those 3 weeks that would send me into UTI hell. I did a lot of research on this product. The only thing that concerned me is formaldehyde is carcinogenic. The way this product works from my understanding; the Chemical mixes with your urine and turns it into formaldehyde which basically makes your urine sterile and keeps any bacteria from growing. Note, your urine should have a certain level of acidity for it to work. I never tested my urine PH. But since I’ve been uti free, I’m assuming it has enough acid to make this stuff work. Haha! I’m honestly elated to have found this! And want to exclaim the news to everyone!! I’m still researching the long term effects but so far I can’t find that there is anything wrong with it likely because the formaldehyde does not stay in your system very long as you urinate. As with anything especially when it comes to medicine and supplements, do your own research. But if you’ve been suffering from UTIs and you can’t get them to go away, give it a shot. This has been a lifesaver for me. I feel like Im going to be able to have a happy sex life now bc I won’t constantly be worried about a uti. I took a break from having sex for nearly 2 years because the UTIs were so bad. And now voilà ! Just wish u found it sooner. To my fellow chronic UTI sufferers, I hope it works for you as well as it has for me.

I don’t know what this stuff normally smells like, but this batch smells horrible. I bought this for potential future use just in case my animals get a uti. But this stuff literally reeks. I have it double bagged in two ziplock bags and I can still smell it and can’t keep it in the house. I guess I’m going to just throw it away because it’s too late to return it.

Do you suffer from “honeymoon Cystitis?” Bladder irritation or frequent UTIs? Use THIS. Make sure you have a microgram scale. Instead of spending big bucks on name brand stuff (Cystex), get relief for you or your pet, or take prophylactically to avoid bladder infections.Yes, this stuff smells like dead fish. Just keep it in the fridge ir freezer with the whole container inside a freezer/heavy duty ziplock gallon bag, and you won’t smell it unless you open it for a dose.Far less expensive than name brand human over the counter bladder antibacterial treatments, amd just as effective.

This stuff is amazing for UTI prevention, with one caveat: the urine MUST BE ACIDIC (ideally, pH under 5.5) for it to be converted to formaldehyde, which is how it works as a bacteriostat. If the urine's pH is above 5.5, taking this is a waste of money. I recommend getting a pH meter from a reputable manufacturer and regularly checking the urine's pH. At the last catheter exchange, the there was no encrustation on the old catheter, unlike at previous appointments where that had been an issue. The only thing that changed in the weeks prior to that appointment was the addition of methenamine. A 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water (or 25/75 to start) has been the easiest way to accomplish this.

The medicine has a strong fish smell. My inquiry was to ask if this was normal. Amazon community answers were mixed - one said yes, one said no etc.The seller responded straight away and recommended contacting manufacturer so I want to be clear the one star is for the product and manufacturer , not the seller.The manufacturer didnt bother to respond so I dont trust the integrity of this product.
