"Why We Drop Out": Understanding and Disrupting Student Pathways to Leaving School
S**.
Great introduction to the Drop-Out Problem & How WE can stop it!
“Why We Drop Out” uses personal narratives from students as well as explanations of certain theories to explain and delve deeper into the issue of High School Drop-outs. The Authors chronologically organize the novel by exploring the pathway to graduation. The author’s point out pathways and risk factors for each level of schooling that may affect a student’s graduation rate of success. Although the “Why We Drop Out” is a quick read, I believe that it is beneficial for any professional that will be teaching students, who want to research more about the issue of Dropping Out. The authors not only explore this issue of dropping out, but they also provide a solution and a “what can we do?” to help provide support for “at-risk” students. One thing I will say is that the book covers the topic a little to “at surface”. Like I said, it would be beneficial to read for anyone in the Education Profession or anyone who may be interested in why students drop out. More statistics could have been added. Overall, this book would be great for someone who needs an introduction to the issue. I enjoyed reading “Why We Drop Out?” because it gave a story to the countless numbers and percentages of people who do drop out. It could teach empathy and allow teachers to think about students as people with real lives rather than just a brain to soak up information. I would recommend this book to a beginning teacher to know that they may be able to impact and change someone’s life by just being observant.
