Dark Matter - Season 1 [DVD]

A tremendous series! Great character actors who develop across the episodes. Swash buckling adventure in space, mainly on board ship and you never quite know what is coming next. Lots of tension and suspense too. It feels a bit like Guardians of the Galaxy crossed with Stargate Universe, but whatever it is, it is good! Can't wait for series two!

Liked the series when I saw it on TV but missed some of the episodes so at least this let me catch up. 6 people awaken from stasis with their memories gone and have to try piece together who they are, what their relationship is to one another (are they all actually crew members or even human?) and somehow survive with various other groups out to kill or capture them.

Based on the Graphic Novel of the same name, the initial premise of Dark Matter is relatively simple. Six people awaken from stasis on a badly damaged warship drifting in space, the problem being that they have somehow had their memories erased and they don't know who they, or anyone else aboard ship, are. It seems that a traitor within the crew has deliberately done this to them for unknown reasons. As they attempt to make sense of what has happened to them, this introduces us to their universe, dominated by the "Galactic Authority" and competing Mega-corporations. It soon becomes apparent that they are (mostly) mercenaries for hire, usually employed by the Corporations to do the kind of dirty work that they don't want to be directly linked to. The revelation that they are the notorious crew of the mercenary ship "The Raza", wanted for mass-murder and piracy does not sit well with the crew but can they alter their lives even if they want to? While I like Science Fiction in general, Dark Matter is one of my favourite types, hard and uncompromising. I thoroughly enjoyed all thirteen episodes and can definitely recommend Dark Matter as a more than worthwhile purchase. I found the last episode particularly effective and can barely wait for the next series to come out. Of course, the real test of it's quality will come with this second series, when we see what happens to the crew following their betrayal and if it begins to open into the larger stories hinted at in the first series.

im quite picky about what syfi i like and saw some footage of this 1st series online and was hooked and had to get the full series 1 set to be able to watch it all. very happy i did this is really good and hope and cant wait for a second series excellent and good effects and story line actors parts welll cast

An intriguing start. Far out in space, in an otherwise unpopulated spaceship, six characters regain consciousness - their memories wiped. Who? What? Why? In due course various backgrounds are revealed, some of them startling to put it mildly. But are they for real? Can anything be believed? Understandably the six are suspicious of oneanother. With dangers ahead, what chance of their ever working as a team? 13 episodes. Zoie Palmer makes impact as the Android, but it is hard to warm to anybody else - one particularly obnoxious. The Japanese segments are quite interesting, but generally the crew's adventures are rather casually contrived and fail to convince. ( At one point one is savagely punched again and again in the face. In the very next scene he simply sports a split lip.) Too much has not been thought through. For example, exactly how big is the spaceship? It looks enormous. This makes nonsense of so-called "thorough" searches for others who may be on board. Apparently there is a mole in their midst. When colleagues are suspected, even cabin searches for incriminating evidence seem very perfunctory. Presumably tension was expected to mount in the final episode, as various colleagues fall victim of the mole - identity only revealed in the final seconds. Apparently the cast themselves did not know who this might be. One has the impression the scriptwriters could simply have drawn the name from a hat. Ideally viewers should genuinely care, excitement mounting. If only! Some may feel the series represents opportunities lost. Apparently there are two further seasons, they hopefully with a greater sense of direction and characters less one-dimensional.

At times it is so low rent it is laughable, lack of production values really undermine what is already weak. No original concept. Looks like a fan fiction mash up of Farscape, Firefly and Blakes 7. But reminds me most of Andromeda (which I thought was terrible).

Yes all good. The dvd was in goo d condition. Haven't watched it yet, but will one night this week. Cheers

Mir fiel diese Serie zuerst im FreeTV auf Tele 5 auf und da die Macher auch Stargate gemacht hatten war es klar das ich rein schaue. Die Hintergrundstory ist wirklich interessant mit der Suche nach dem Grund für den Erinnerungsverlust. Auch was als Story der jeweiligen Folgen geliefert wird ist gut gemacht und erzählt. Die Figuren sind gut gespielt und die Verbindungen untereinander entwickeln sich gut sodass sie lebendig wirken(lustig ist das sie sich teils anders entwickeln als sie vor dem Verlust der Erinnerungen waren aber das schaut euch lieber selbst an). Die special Effects sind solide aber nicht Top. Dennoch haben sie alles aus dem Budget rausgeholt denn es wirkt nie billig. Für Sci-Fi Fans ein muss. Nur Schade das die Serie dem Wahnsinn des Sy-Fy Channel Rotstifts zum Opfer fiel.

excellent scfi space opera. fun show

Nous avons une très bonne série de "space opera" en anglais qui rappelle un peu la très regrettée série "Firefly". Nous découvrons le monde à la manière des personnages eux-mêmes qui ont tous perdus leur mémoire personnelle mais pas leurs capacités et leurs compétences qu'ils redécouvrent un peu au hasard des événements et des besoins. En effet, le scénario débute avec le réveil de stase des 6 membres d'un vaisseau spatial. Le seul problème c'est qu'ils ont tous perdu la mémoire et ils n'ont aucune idée de l'endroit où ils se trouvent, de ce qu'ils sont censés faire et n'ont aucun souvenir de leur passé. Nous découvrons le monde de "Dark Matter" comme eux-mêmes au fil de leurs aventures. Au niveau ambiance, nous évoluons dans l'espace de stations spatiales vers la suivante dans un vaisseau aux décors plutôt sobres (du métal partout) mais réussis. Pour ceux qui jouent un peu, cela rappelle l'ambiance du jeu "Elite" ou encore du MMO "Eve Online". Les personnages ont chacun leurs talents particuliers et une histoire qui s'avère riche au fur et à mesure qu'ils la redécouvrent. Pour survivre, ces derniers sont obligés d'accepter des missions sans trop savoir où ils mettent les pieds car ils ne veulent pas révéler qu'ils ont perdu la mémoire. Ce qui entraîne des aventures avec beaucoup d'action et d'inconnu. En résumé, il s'agit d'une très bonne série pour ceux qui aiment le genre "space opera".
