In this 1960 NBC TV western, William Bendix The Life of Riley and Doug McClure The Virginian, Checkmate star as the Overland Stage superintendent and his young sidekick as they struggle to keep the stagecoach safe from thieves, vigilantes, Native Americans and general mayhem as they move the stage line West from Missouri, across the Rockies, and on to California. Bendix shines as Frederick Kelly, the crusty superintendent who, in addition to his official duties, must keep an eye on his more reckless young assistant, Flip Flippen, played by a young Doug McClure in his first series starring role. The chemistry between McClure and Bendix is nowhere more apparent than when the two share danger, but the show is filled with good humor as well, and has been described as a cross between Tales of Wells Fargo and Laredo. Each episode of Overland Trail finds the pair pitted against some new threat to the stage line, and the series although short-lived, has an impressive guest cast list, including Harry Guardino Perilous Passage, John Anderson The High Bridge, Denver Pyle Lawyer in Petticoats, Werner Klemperer The Vigilantes of Montana, Claude Akins Fire in the Hole, Slim Pickens and Mercedes McCambridge Sour Annie, John Carradine The Reckoning, John McIntire The Most Dangerous Gentleman and many more. B&W.

1960 NBC TV Western Series.....
Presented by NBCUniversal and distributed by Timeless Media Group, this is a series I seem to have missed! Having now seen the 17 classic episodes on 4 DVDs, am glad to have this complete series in my collection. WILLIAM BENDIX and DOUG McCLURE are good together as they struggle to keep their Overland Stage line safe as they move West from Missouri, across the Rockies and on to California. A very enjoyable series with an impressive guest cast list.

but having enjoyed other TV westerns from Time Media
I was not familiar with this series, but having enjoyed other TV westerns from Time Media, I thought it would be worth viewing. As other reviewers have already commented, this is one of the better western series which deserved far greater success. My criticism is with the media. Three of the discs in the set suffered from freezing and picture blocking, spoiling my enjoyment of three episodes (one on each of the three affected discs). The faults were verified by playing the discs on three different players (two dedicated DVD players and one Blu-ray player). A replacement set suffered from exactly the same problem at the same points in the program, so the problem appears to be with the disc authoring. Shame, but the set is still worth having for the remaining episodes.

Another fine Western
Are you sick of reality? (Shows, I mean ) Modern TV is so useless. I prefer the oldies but goodies. This Western hasWilliam Bendix ( Life of Reilly , Kill the Umpire ) as the operator of The Overland Stage Lines, with Doug McClure as hisright hand man. They get into ( and out of ) all kinds of trouble , with a number of noteworthy guest appearances.Another fine addition to my collection.

Entertaining actioner
Fast-paced 52 minute classic black and white 1960 western, revolving around a stagecoach line. The Picture quality is acceptable, the sound is clear. Some episodes are better than others. The two stars are the main reason the show works. It's a lot of fun, with some humour to it. Highly recommended for people who enjoy classic tv westerns.

Trail to Adventure
This is another good western series released by Timeless Media Group. It stars William Bendix and Doug McClure.Plenty of action in this series about the Overland Trail,a major stage route to the west all the way to the Pacific Ocean.Willaim Bendix played the man in charge of the stage line with Doug McClure as his sidekick who had been brought up by indians. The two actors play of one another well. There are quite a few funny moments shared by the two actor's here like when the stagecoach almost sinks in the mud.Bendix exclaims it wasn't this deep the last time he came through,to which McClure retorts, "were you standing in the saddle at the time".Another episode has Bendix in the barber's chair with a very nervous barber with a shaky hand after hearing gun fire outside."I've calmed down now" says the barber "so I can now finish you off" to which Bendix replies "That's what I'm afraid of.Another series that only lasted one season and should have lasted longer, but then Doug McClure would never have ended up in his most famous role as Trampas on "The Virginian".I bought this series sight unseen and was happy I did.
