Tai Chi Chuan Classical Yang Style: the Complete Form and Qigong

Yang is a fantastic teacher.
Yang produces very good quality. His teaching is in depth and very clear. Making it easy to follow and comprehend. He really goes in depth teaching the history and theory as well as the practice. He is by far the most in depth teacher I have found thus far on martial arts. I learned primarily from books and have taught for twenty years and I started out with some of his books and am still running behind him with my tongue hanging out for exhaustion trying to catch up to him. Through great desire and hard work with the correct guidence of Dr. Yang people begged me to teach them and start a class. He will give you the correct instruction but only you can determine how much it benefits. Through hard work and lots of pondering. You can attain very high levels. I should know Ive had third degree black belts boiling mad because I taught them more in ten minutes than they learned in five years and paid thousands for classes and it was all blown away in minutes because of the foundation I gained from Dr Yangs books.

This book showed how to perform a tai chi form
I was looking for a book that showed me how to learn a tai chi form and this book did just that, at first it seemed quite long but it was just broken down into quite small segments

A lot of information
I already had some knowledge of the history and practice of tai chi chuan and still found book a little confusing at first. It makes sense after review and practice. Also, must use DVD. Dr Yang is a grandmaster, he is a purist, and this book is very good, but it is not for the casual learner of tai chi or the person who wants quick and simple explanation. I found the guide on Chinese pronunciation helpful for learning the Chinese names of different forms, I find myself rereading chapters & gaining greater insight as my own practice of tai chi improves. I am a female, 67 yrs old and currently using Dr Yang's 37 form DVD. Tai chi has changed my life in ways I never imagined.

A good book, written by a tai chi master
This book provides much useful information for both beginners and tai chi experts, written by a tai chi master. Well worth reading. If you like this book, you will probably enjoy the many other books he has written as well.

Hardly usable on Kindle
This would have been great if the ebook version had just been the print pages scanned into an ebook file. Instead, they changed the formatting so that when you get to the section that shows all the different movements, it only has one picture per page. With most of the movements having multiple pictures, 4, 5, or even 8, this makes it very, very difficult to use for learning the movements. I returned my ebook purchase because that is exactly what I needed it for. That said, when I look at the preview for the print version it looks very well laid out, so that it would be easy to flip open to a page and follow along with the pictures. I am considering purchasing the print version to replace my ebook, but for the price difference and the fact that I would have to wait for shipping anyway, may just spring for a dvd.

Awesome summary of the first martial art
I have been in the martial arts(karate), for years and have not had a more difficult workout in my life. It takes months just to build enough muscles in your legs to withstand the postures and do the form. Something was always missing in Karate but the Qi aspect in Chinese martial arts is fully explained and enlightening as well as the Yin an Yang principles. The form takes 3 years to learn correctly and 3 more to begin to understand the Yin and Qi through proper breathing while doing the form. Highly recommended if you want to go far beyond mere health benefits and into the self defense aspect. It is not for the faint of heart as it demands great patience and perseverance to master...ten years to be exact....maybe longer if you do just the video and book.

Bible of Yang style
This is a veritable treasure chest of knowledge of the Yang style long form written by one of the most respected old style masters explained in a clear manner. One really needs to purchase one of the DVDs to learn the form if you are doing it alone with no access to a master. The Yang Tai Chi for Beginnners by Dr Yang covers the form nicely, but one specifically made for this book has a lot of valuable additional material. You can't go wrong with both.

Different but informative
Some of the postures and transitions in Dr. Yang's Long form differ from the Long Form I learned but I still find it useful. It also arrived weeks sooner than expected.

Next best thing to a good master...
A very substantial book!Dr Yang Jwing-Ming has clearly put a lot of effort in preparing this book. The pictures and explanations are easy to grasp, and make it quite possible IMHO to learn a great deal directly from the book (without a teacher)if you are open-minded and if you persevere. The complete Yang Long Form is presented in details, plus many preparatory Qi Gong exercises to use as such or to help you learn the form.In fact, while Dr Yang and all respectable authors will strongly urge you to search for direct teaching from a good master, this book is the next best thing to a master. The quality and completeness of the theory presented inside have given me more insight and useful answers than years spent with some teachers. While a good master is unbeatable to help you learn an art, it is also very difficult to actually find one! Many not-so-good teachers will put confusion in your mind and create an aura of mystery about their art, and discourage you to inquire elsewhere so you'll remain dependent upon them.Dr Yang's approach is radically opposed to this. He writes openly, clearly explaining a lot of information to help you understand the meaning and the methods of tai chi chuan. No mystery here, just the right information. This is what you get from a book written by a real master. Whether you are learning with a teacher or alone, this book will be very useful.***Update on December 17, 2015: Nearly three years later, I am also using a few books by other authors, but Dr. Yang's teachings are the solid core of my 5-hour daily practice. I have three dozens of his books and DVDs and participated in a seminar in Boston.Dr. Yang's teaching really helps me to grow in the long term, plus he's a fantastic person to meet!
