Treat the gate completely with a good quality timber preservative Brands such as Cuprinol or Ronseal Timber care products available at Toolstation, Wickes, B & Q, .These products could be applied manually by brushes.Double coating could help preserve the wood more

Q: This this the proper Creosote or the substitution?

No, Creosote is no longer available, this is a substitute. It smells a bit like Creosote. I have used it on new and old fencing, and it seems to be fine. Water runs off it. The colour does come out darker on old fencing. Very runny to apply. Cover up well, use gloves, and worth buying the big thick brush as I did. Hope this all helps.

It ends up a light golden brown. Not unpleasant
