Practical Treatise on Painting in Oil-Colours (Classic Reprint)

...after watching Ceasar Santos video on youtube ( in my opinion one of the best there is in the classical methods in these modern times ), he recommended this book so I ordered it from Amazon. The book is written in old English but you can pretty much decipher what is being said if your knowledge on these classical methods is up to par. This book will not teach you how to paint but it will give you a better understanding of the painting process by the old masters. I do not recommended this book for a beginner or someone who paints just does art "recreationally." You must have a firm knowledge on painting techniques, color theory, paints , grounds, and mediums etc... to fully get the most out of this book. Hope this is helpful!

This book was written in the late 18th century, and as such contains no photos and uses old English. If you're interested in some beginner book with small words and lots of pictures, this is not it. If, however, you're the kind of person who, for instance, researches the colors used by an old master on a particular painting so you can copy it accurately, this will interest you. It contains specific colors and corresponding mixes to use in portrait/landscape/drapery etc, and a process for employing them. Try them, learn from them, adapt them to your own desires.

The book explains the layers and pigments used to create the masterpieces!While I will never mix my own paint, the book clearly (in old English) lays out the process and materials used by the Old Masters!

It’s very deceptive, I thought I was buying a reprint and what I received was a book made of photo copies of a real book, very disappointing

Cesar Santos has YouTube videos (2) on this book and interoperation of it. It is written in old English. But it is not that difficult to understand. Definitely an approach to painting and in my opinion has been helpful in my painting.

Didn't find it useful at all and returned it for refund. Bought it after watching Youtube piece by Cesar Santos. The book is a facsimile of the original book - very old. Useful only to historians in my opinion.

An interesting read. Probably best for someone interested in researching the subject than a hobbyist.
