Sherlock Holmes' mouse counterpart Basil lives in the basement of 221B Baker Street, just below the great man himself. Hired to locate a kidnapped toymaker, Basil and his trusty sidekick Dawson soon find themselves up against their arch-enemy Professor Ratigan. It seems Ratigan wants to use the toymaker to make a mechanical replica of the Queen who will then bestow the villain with the right to rule over rodent London - but not if Basil can find a way to stop him. Review: 2nd best animated film in history!!! - this film, in my opinion is a massively underappreciated Disney classic and in my opinion, it was this film that started the golden age of Disney rather than little mermaid. this film has sustained my love for all my life and I never grow tired of it. there are very few faults with this classic but i'll start with them. first, this film is simply too short (although it is sheer perfection while it lasts). 2ndly ratigan (the main villain voiced by Vincent price) has too small a role- in ratigan's villain song he only has about 9 lines- although those lines are great. the film lacks any truly moving moments. there are too few songs. great mouse detective has a lot of good things to boast about. 1stly the music in this film is first class and was written by world renowned composer henry macini (composer of pink panther's signature tune). the main theme of this film is one of the best of any animated film ever, in my opinion. 2ndly the villain, ratigan is my favourite villain of all time. it was Vincent price's dream to be a Disney villain and this wish was fulfilled not long before he died. ratigan is a villain of class and of great stature, he is a very very intelligent villain and is not actuallu very dissimilar to moriarty. ratigan also has a great physical dominance as he is HUGE but not too huge. the best thing about ratigan is of course, his voice. the script and Vincent price work together incredibly well along with the brilliant movement of ratigan in the animation. 3rdly the lovable characters, in my opinion, there is not a single unlovable character in this film. 4thly the animation, this film has incredible revolutionary animation in its final sequence and it is a delight to watch. and finally the plot, the plot suits the characters and is just the right blend of childish animation and a true detective mystery. in conclusion this film is one of Disney's best and I struggle to think of anything that rivals it when it comes to villains. and so i give it a well deserved rating of 96/100 Review: A forgotten gem - This is one of those films that I loved as a child watching with my big brother. So when I saw it on blu ray I had to get it. The big question was, is it as good as I remember? Well the answer was yes! This is not like most Disney films as I think there is only 1 song. As you can tell from the front cover this is basically Disney does Sherlock Holmes. It is done really well, the story line is very good. Having Vincent Price doing the voice of Ratigan was a stroke of genius as he does it so well. Overall I would recommend it, however, I would say that perhaps very young children may not like it as its not as colourful and sing song as most Disney and the ending is a bit scary.

Good for a rainy Sunday afternoon
My kids (3 & 5) think it's great, cannot remember how many times we have seen it. Animation is somewhat dated when compared to Cars and all the other marvelous Pixar films. What is interesting is the "how they made it" film, it was one of the first animated films to feature computer animation. When you see/hear how they did, you begin to realize how far we have come in the past 30 years... In summary, good story, great characters (Vincent Price is excellent) and a good 90 minutes of fun for a rainy Sunday afternoon, which we seem to have had plenty of lately.

Great Film
I remember seeing this with my daughter when it was first released and loved it then even though it never got great reviews at the time. I guess with the resurgence of Sherlock Holmes on the tv this might be more appreciated now. The quality you would expect of a Disney cartoon but don't expect a lot of catchy songs but still worth watching.
