Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary On The Whole Bible (Nelson's Super Value Series)

Such a helpful aid to understand the Bible.
I value this book not only because of it's content, but also because of its size and the style in which it is written. The size does not overwhelm me like other aids I've bought. It's easy to hold and I can quickly find the reference for which I'm looking. Henry's book - at least the one I purchased - is very user friendly. The style is straight forward and easy to understand. I'm a very literal thinker so the way this book is written does not cause me to go "tilt" trying to figure out what he is conveying.Just as the cover states - it is easy to read, it is outlined chapter by chapter -- all in one book. I believe it would be good for beginning student's of the Bible as well as for seasoned teachers and seasoned people who enjoy studying the Bible. Definitely a great resource tool. I also think it would be a good help for non-believers who study the Bible, for students researching for reports, etc. It appears to give very straight explanations that would not cause controversy for any reader, student, researcher.Supplements included in the Matthew Henry Commentary include:Fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah, harmony of the gospels, the Jewish calendar, maps and other documentations to help one understand the timeline in the Bible. Time truly gets away from me when I wander through the verses, the maps, timelines, etc. imagining what it was like "back then" but it also makes me so grateful for the "now" of time for us.

easy reading
I have a vision problem and this is nice large print pages are thin but not tissue (maybe 2 tissues thin) thin ,so you may get the bleed through from highlighting which I love doing (but can't because of bleeding through so I underline them... What I find helpful is, it starts with an introduction to each book and an outline to each chapter in that book. what I don't like is it's not verse by verse the chapters can be 2 to 14 verses or more together. There is no color maps just black and white with an index for the maps which helped me to get a better picture in my head but with the black and white and grey some of the words I couldn't see (I need color to see all the words, part of my vision issue). It also have in the back Prophecies of the Messiah fulfilled in Jesus Christ. and the Harmony of the Gospels. If this is still not large enough and for some it may not be you will save yourself alot of frustration and use a kindle which I have to use at times but I like holding my books and highlighting in them and taking notes which you can do in the kindle on amazon, the color is septa which my eyes don't get so tired from lots of reading, I have the free download kindle but this book is a good resource and reading is easy to read print.

With me whenever I study
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary is opened every time I study. I use the ESV Study Bible, my computer, and this commentary. While the original commentary is numerous volumes, this one is much shorter (hence: concise). From a few short sentences to several long paragraphs, Henry interprets small chunks of biblical texts to reveal what is happening and how it works in God's salvation story. Henry realized long ago that the entirety of the Bible points to the person and work of Jesus Christ, and this shines through in this terrific volume. I'm not sure what other reviewers mean by the type size being too small; it's actually much larger than most Bible types/fonts.

A Lot for the Money
This is a quality publication, a 'holy book' and I would recommend it highly to anyone who is seeking a deeper understanding of the Holy Bible from any perspective. Like Matthew Henry's words about the Bible in Genesis, the following four points make it truly unique: (1) We call it "the book, by way of eminency" -- and this concise Commentary is truly pre-eminent above all others; (2) we call it incomparable for for it is incomparably the best Commentary on one of the best Books that ever was written; as Matthew Henry called it the 'book of books, shining like the sun in the firmament of learning"; (3) we call it valuable, more valuable and useful than other books, "like the moon and stars, borrowing their light from it"; and ( We call it a holy book like the the Holy Book itself, because as the Bible was written by holy men, and "indited by the Holy Ghost", so was this Commentary, truly blessed and indicted by the same Holy Spirit of God.

Makes understanding the Bible easy
If you want a little more history on the Bible book you’re reading this is a great start for a new believer. Makes the passage easier to understand. Everyone should have a commentary of some sort, for origin, who verse is for, why this was said and that information helps with applying to your life and that is the purpose after all. There are commentaries for the advanced bible scholars but this is a great start. Easy to understand!

Arrived on time and good shape
The 1960 version is much better. This version was inconsistent with earlier versions. Would not buy this edition and will settle for used versions of the 1960.

This is still a good reference to have
I gave this book only 4 stars because it is concise. I feel that this book should have the entire collection. My reasoning, I feel you miss much when Mr. Henry's thoughts are simply summarized as opposed to having his complete dissertation available. This is still a good reference to have, especially for those readers either new to the Bible or those who want to take their Bible study to the next level. I still suggest finding the complete commentary (which can be found online), but this book is a quick reference that one can still manage.

Excellent companion for Bible study
Matthew Henry is a favorite and his commentary doesn’t disappoint. Digging into the Bible is always an enriching experience and with this commentary so much more is shared and learned.

Spelling and grammar is awful who allowed this to be printed see photo.
Who on earth allowed this to be released with errors like this. First time using it at the book of ruth and she has been renamed RUM and Naomi is her MODIER IN LAW. Seriously! What is the rest of the book like?

Not What It Seems!
Look at the word "concise"! This is not the good, well edited versions done by Gerald Peterman in the early 1990's. There is a vast quantity of good material from Matthew Henry missing from this. No doubt good a s a "taster" but I fear it is not a patch on the original or 1990's edition. Sadly, the Christian world is dumbing-down even the "classic" works down.

but have been glad to get this to replace it
Another book I gave away when I retired from ministry, but have been glad to get this to replace it. A very useful reference book. As one archbishop said, 'Never despise old books or small books'!
