THE INVASION BEGINS BASED ON THE WORLDWIDE BEST-SELLING MANGA AND HIT ANIME... Tiny creatures called 'Parasites' have arrived on Earth with the sole purpose of taking over human bodies and preying on mankind. One such Parasite latches on to ordinary high school student, Shinichi Izumi. Fortunately, he is able to fight it off before it reaches his brain. But unfortunately, it is now stuck within his right hand. Shinichi cannot reveal his terrible secret to those around him, but a strange relationship develops between himself and the creature he calls "Migi" ("Righty"). Before long, they begin to encounter other Parasites which launch savage attacks against them and endanger the life of his childhood friend, Satomi. When Shinichi's beloved mother is killed and taken over by a Parasite, it becomes an all-out war between humanity and the Parasites. But nothing is black and white in this struggle. Why were the Parasites created? Are they here to cull our numbers? The planet needs to be preserved, but we also want to protect our loved ones. Amidst this conflict of values, Shinichi and Migi have no choice but to hurl themselves into the fight against the ever more complex attack of the Parasites.

Sci-fi at its best!
One of the best sci-fi films of the year. Special effects are excellent if a little horrible to watch. My only complaint is it isn’t finished at the end but is the beginning of a follow up sequel.

A bit different (a review of both films)
Tiny creatures named 'parasites' have come to Earth and are infecting people - taking over their bodies. Shinici is one of their targets but he manages to stop it reaching his brain. The parasite, however, still becomes part of Shinici but becomes an ally rather than a predator. This is a set of two movies from Japan which can be viewed as a mini-series. It has good production values including very clever digital special effects which are quite convincing at times. The story starts out quite well and there is a lot of time spent getting to know the lead characters and the intentions of the parasytes, but little to nothing by way of explanation as to where the parasytes came from and why they picked Earth. All up the two movies run at approximately 227 minutes and this seemed to be too long for the subject material. By the start of the second film there seemed to be no new ideas and it was really just wrapping up the ideas opened up in the first film. The second film also did a lot of moralising, talking about the rights of humans and parasytes, which wore thin quickly after seeing what the parasytes got up to in the first film. And then we got to the ending which explained things away too easily and was far too convenient. This was still a bit of fun and, being from Japan is a bit different to the type of movie you generally get from the US. 3.5 stars.

A good attempt at converting the manga/anime to live action
Whilst not a brilliant live action adaptation, if you are a fan of the manga/anime then you will also enjoy this for the most part.If you have not read the manga or watched the anime you may not fully understand what is going on, as a lot is left out, and there are a couple of changes are not needed. So I would recommend reading the manga or watching the anime first before watching this to get the most enjoyment from this version.
