Harry Belefonte
I have always loved the music of Harry Belefonte and was saddened by his death. I was having difficulty with my record player and thought that perhaps I could find the music on a cd. Now I can take it with me when I travel with my portable player. The music takes me back to my high school days.

Belafonte classics in questionable sound!
Belafonte’s best calypso albums are all here, for a bargain price, and with the original liner notes, neatly packaged and spread out over 2 CDs in a handy fold-out-tray. What’s not to like? Well, the music is outstanding, without question… but, just like a few other Avid releases I’ve purchased over the years, the sound quality is a bit off. I’ve heard these tracks on older compilations as well as on vinyls and here they sound overly processed and quite trebly. On a few occasions, Belafonte’s voice sounds as if processed though a ”swishy” tube, you know, just like audio becomes over the phone or a zoom meeting when the connection is a bit poor. Can’t explain it. Whoever mastered this (Euri George?) obviously took no note of this, but to my ears, this collection is unlistenable. I cannot therefore not recommend this particular release, but I suggest you go for Sony’s similarly priced 3-CD ”The Real Belafonte” instead, like I did. Mind you, I have quite a few Avid releases on my shelf, jazz albums mostly, that sound great. Just not this one, I’m afraid. These cheap Avid collections are, regrettably, hit and miss.
