Aquaman 4: Underworld

One of Rebirth's Best Titles Gets Even Stronger with Better Art and a Political Theme
Abnett takes his already strong Aquaman series to the next level with this new volume. Arthur Curry has been dethroned by the ruling class of Atlantis and replaced by an extremist named Corum Rath. Rath has sealed Atlantis off from the outside world using a mystical barrier (that also trapped Mera on the outside and Arthur on the inside) and now has plans to purge Atlantis of "undesirable" elements. Rebuffed by Atlantis for the last time, Arthur swears to give up his claim to the throne and instead work as a vigilante in his city, not unlike his buddy Batman. Operating from the shadows, Arthur has the populace convinced that his ghost is now haunting the underworld boroughs of the city, that is until he meets classic pre-New 52 character Dolphin: an Atlantean mutant who hopes to inspire Arthur to take his place at the head of the local resistance. Meanwhile, Mera enlists the help of Tula and Garth to breach the mystical barrier and get back to her husband. The book is an absolute blast and Abnett uses the new political status quo in the book to weave an almost Game of Thrones-like story. Characters like Vulko and King Shark are give new importance thanks to the political backstabbing and the gang wars that erupt in the underworld of Atlantis. The final element that makes this book so strong is the new art direction from Stjepan Sejic. His lovely character designs, cool creatures, and gorgeous backgrounds bring Atlantis alive in a whole new way.

A Must Buy and a Refreshing Change of Pace for Aquaman
This won't be a crazy long review, but you have to pick up this volume of Aquaman Rebirth! The art alone makes it worth the money, but the story does not disappoint in the slightest. I was a little worried at the end of the last volume, I won't spoil any details, but it seemed like they were back-stepping to the same old routine of Arthur needing to reclaim the throne...again. Thankfully, this collection takes us on a very refreshing ride through parts of Atlantis never before seen (at least in this way). We follow several well-known and loved characters. We are even introduced to a few new characters that have a quality which has been all but abandoned by modern comics: they are interesting! Imagine that.My only issue with the story itself is in regards to a certain character who apparently has been fighting from the shadows, but making no effort to disguise his/herself. I feel like this would have been a good opportunity for a costume change. At least a temporary one. Oh well, maybe I misunderstood what the writer was trying to do in those scenes. It in no way messes with the story pacing or quality. The artwork in this book makes me long to see this version of Atlantis on the big screen. It's like a Guardians of the Galaxy underwater. I hope they keep this guy for the next hundred issues.Do yourself a favor and go ahead and buy Aquaman Volume 4. #movetheneedle

Dan Abnett's run has been an absolute joy to read and now it has reached a new high. Aquaman, dethroned, has been forced to survive in the Atlantian underground and has become bitter to the people. Fed up with everyone blaming him and resisting his attempts to open up Atlantis to the world, he begrudgingly joins a growing resistance to take down King Rath. At the same time, Mera, his love, fights to try and find Arthur and reunite with him to take back Atlantis. The art is also absolutely fantastic. Sejic on art is a perfect fit for Aquaman. Incredible detail and amazing facial expressions. I encourage everyone to also look up Sejic's other work and support him. He has tried to break into the big leagues with various books and only has just been getting the recognition he deserves. BUY THIS! Buy Abnett's entire run. You will not regret it.

A great dive into the depths (both puns intended) of Atlantis and Aquaman's place there.
While not quite as well written as the Geoff Johns heyday, this is a great book, beautifully drawn and well told. The first two Aquaman Rebirth volumes were underwhelming: the writing was often awkward and a fair amount of it seemed to be checking boxes. Volume three began to really focus on Aquaman's role as King of Atlantis and his efforts to bring Atlantis into the wider world. By the end of volume III things had gotten, erm, more complex and this volume delves more fully into that narrative. Great story arch overall and absolutely beautiful to look at. This isn't the very best that the Aquaman brand has seen, but it is pretty far up there

One of the best of the unappreciated heroes
If Aquaman is not the best of the Rebirth titles, then it is top 3 (Nightwing and Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps give it a run). Yeah, I like the less well known or appreciated heroes. Honestly, I rarely read Batman and Superman unless its a team up situation. Their stories have been told to the point of ceaseless repetition. But this Aquaman-- he's not the guy who talks to fish. Arthur Curry is complex, the supporting characters are interesting and have their own strengths, and the stories are more than just good vs. bad. This is what comics should all be.

The art by Stjepan Sejic is simply exceptional and magnificent
I bought this one after reading Harleen, simply mesmerized by Stjepan Sejic's art, my favorite artist so far, can't praise it enough. The attention to detail is another level meticulous.

New Artist, Same Quality
Abnetts writing stays strong as volume 4 of the Rebirth continuity of Aquaman sees the king of atlantis join forces with the Aqualad, Garth and numerous others to cement his kingship.Sejic's more photo realistic artstyle is a sharp contrast to the bombastic cartoon esque art of previous issues and breathes new life into the more mystical elements of the Aquaman mythos.
