A Hidden Treasure
I like to think I have read a great many books in the fantasy genre and I obviously have my favourite writers (Feist / Gemmell / Tolkien), but how has this author slipped under my radar for so long?Quite frankly 'Homeland: The Legend of Drizzt (Book 1)' has to be one of the best fantasy books I have read in a very long time, it was absolutely fantastic and I can honestly say it has renewed my love of fantasy as a lot of the books in this genre have become stale and tired of late. The 'Homeland' novel has everything you could ever want from a fantasy classic: murder, deceit, action, adventure, plot twists, great characters and a good story. Quite frankly in my opinion this book is brilliant and a ripping good yarn.I am just absolutely gutted I have not discovered R.A.Salvatore's work in the past as this book to me was a revelation. I just cant understand why R.A.Salvatore hasnt been given better aclaim in the fantasy genre (perhaps its because he writes under the banner: "Forgotten Realms" ?).If you love 'old school' fantasy novels I promise you, you will love this book. I finished the first novel in this series within 3 mights as I was that hooked, and cant wait to start the second book.I am not going to go into detail regarding the storyline of 'Homeland' as that has been overdone on previous reviews, plus you can read the sypnosis on the back of the book or under description (on Amazon). Just trust me this novel is a classic and hopefully you will love it as much as I did.R.A.Salvatore has a new fan.

Great read
Amazing world this author creates. Completely captivating.I have no more words that Amazon apparently require of me ...Amazon take note I'm not doing another review again if I'm being forced to say more than I want.

A good start to a procedural series
I jumped into the world of Drizzt in a later book a long time ago and have been meaning to get back to it. I’d say I liked the later book more but this was an enjoyable read with some interesting world building. Starting at the very beginning for his story is hopefully the best way to enjoy the series and I know for sure that I have good stories to look forward to later in the series.People call Drizzt a Mary-sue of a character which may be more true in later books but so far he’s just the annoying kid at school who is at the top of the class the whole time. We get a hint of how he meets later companions and I’m going to dive right into the next book to see how the gang gets together.

A must read for all fantasy lovers
The language is just beautiful the prose flows lyrically. The matriarchal society of this fantasy world is very different to that of our own society but unfortunately it is not too difficult to imagine. As a generalisation of this world, there is not compassion, mercy, empathy. The characters are all extremely well written but as readers we are left with three definite favourites - Drizzt, Zaknafein and Guenhwyvar, I will leave you to read it for yourself to find out why.The battle scenes are well described and real. The complex relationship structure within this novel is extremely well written and draws the reader in, you will quickly begin to take sides.I absolutely loved the ending of this book and will not be waiting long before I get my hands on the next in the series. If you are a fan of fantasy then go out now and buy this book - start a new adventure.A definite 5 stars - total escapism and fantasy.

Very entertaining
As origins stories go this was fantastic. I wish I had read it many years ago I’m very late to the party in this respect.

Excellent Story
A very well written story. The life of a Drow, examined against the evil underdark society. The trappings of treachery and deceit played out with the boys path into adulthood and the ultimate rejection of that society. I would recommend this 1st book of the series to any fan of the D&D role playing genre.

Awesome schlock
I could make a huge list of all the issues I have with this book, even speaking as a huge D&D fan and a fan of, let's call it genre fiction. So I will, because it's fun, but all you really need to know is that despite all the complaints and a million more left unlisted, I really enjoyed this book.It moves at a good clip, does action well, has a great setting and pushes all the D&D references pretty well, aside from Drizzt clearly being at least level 5 from the start of a level 1 campaign. You've read this book a million times, but it's familiar and comfy and Menzoberranzan is awesome so forgive the copy paste job.Note that this is not one for those sensitive to issues of race, gender or nature vs. nurture. Despite presumably good intentions this book was first published in 1990. The perennial issue of the same D&D races coded as racial minorities persist, Drizzt and his father are the exceptions, male paragons in an evil matriarchy, you will find a million different and better takes than in the Amazon reviews, just be warned.Appendix A: The Bumper List of Silly Gripes1. Does darkvision really work like that?2. Drizzt is ridiculously overpowered3. Is multi classing allowed in this campaign?4. More tired tropes than you can shake a stick at

Exceptional
First book of The Legend Of Drizzt. A truly defining work about anything dark elf. R.A. Salvatore really has gotten around all the cult and psychology at play. A genius plot to introduce Drizzt as a character. The writer follows an easy to follow focused and fast style using multiple character perspectives on the plot. He leaves up most things to the readers own imagination. To close the gaps. That works nicely for a totally strange and complex world anda perverted elven race. Unfortunately a dark world without lights is unlikely to ever appear on cinema screens. Absolutely stunning storyline intro.
