Old (writer) dog, new tricks
Tell Me How To Write a Story has the subtitle “Good, Basic Advice for Novices Ready to Write.”Good, basic advice—yes. For novice writers—not exclusively.I’ve been writing since before the 1980s. Studied countless writing books. Attended classes and a few conferences. Even edited for publications with varied requirements and preferences. In this book, EJ Runyon takes even the basics to another level. Not only what the basic tools are in a writer’s toolbox, but also how to use them and why. With Runyon walking you though examples and exercises, sprinkled throughout with editing and polishing tips, any writer can apply the knowledge to their own works. More importantly, the methods here do not impose a formulaic voice over an author’s own voice. Although the book’s primary focus is fiction, what Runyon presents can be applied equally well across genres and styles (literary, commercial, experimental, creative nonfiction, etc.).For beginning writers, the book is an excellent starting point on craftmanship and story elements. For experienced writers, it’s an excellent book to help improve the quality of their writing. And this old writer dog loves learning new tricks to improve her writing.

A selection of good ideas written down with ADD enthusiasm
This book reminds me of a selection of good ideas written down with ADD enthusiasm more than some type of organized lesson plan. Open the book at random and you will find something useful on every page.

A must have at your elbow.
Something you should know about me. I have a very large collection of writing books covering different styles, techniques, and genres. I can't help myself. I love reading the thoughts of other writers. What works. What doesn't. This book is on a whole other level. E.J. doesn't just rattle off lists of do and do not. She explains the logic behind the process and points out areas I never thought about before. It isn't just about writing the best sentence. It's about digging deep into your characters and plot. Reversely, it isn't just about motivation and story arc. It's also about finding the perfect word to convey how you feel. It's taking those word and wondering, if you tweaked the order, could you make it sing. She has changed my world for the better.
