Can you shorten it down from 41 inches ?

Despite the description, I actually measure it at 42 inches, and it has no way of shortening it normally. I suppose you could cut through the metal leg bits at the bottom but I'm not sure how well it would hold up to that kind of metalwork.

I have retail sale tabloid style newspaper books for they are 16-7/8" x 10-7/8" will they fit on the shelves without having to fold?
