Excellent tone, easy to learn, LOUD whistle for sessions/jams
Decided to order a Kerry Whistle after watching artists use them and reading positive reviews online. After getting one sent from Europe (great service on the quick shipping!) I was pleased to see the whistle lived up to the hype. It has a nice bright yet slightly airy tone that sets it apart from a concert flute, and it was intuitive to learn.Pros: it is loud, plenty of volume to punch through in a band or live gig, jumps octave easily and the overtones allow a full 2 octave diatonic rangeCons: it is LOUD and the whistle doesn’t prefer to speak if played softly. Maybe not the best for playing in an apartment or with other people close during practice. As a Jazz saxophonist, I’m usually conscientious of volume and want to protect what’s left of my hearing. With this whistle, I measured an average of 85-95db with peak sound levels at 100-105. 106 was the highest, and that was reached by overblowing to get the double high A to sound. The loudness shouldn’t be a problem when performing, but I would highly recommend using some type of concert-goer ear plug or even wraparound headphones when practicing or performing. Otherwise, over the long-term hearing loss is a risk since the “safe” range is somewhere around 80-85db or less, and anything above 95-100 damages hearing over time.a little extra volume shouldn’t be a concern if you choose the Busker Kerry Whistle since these are made to be loud, but I wanted to share the numbers just as a warning. The only other con was that my “A” Kerry Whistle may have been tuned to 432hz as it was perfectly in tune at 432 but flat across all notes at 440hz. After shaving some material off on the collar joint, the intonation better matched 440. I’m unsure if the Kerry brand makes both or how that happened. Maybe they are meant to be blown at max volume which pushes the intonation higher, but even then it seemed a little flat until the tuning slide was modified.TL;DR great sounding whistle, plenty of loudness, glad I purchased!
