A lot of Typography history
The media could not be loaded. I originally got this book for a class in typography for college and it’s been a pretty good read. I’m not really a “in depth history” kinda person but if you want to learn about type and its origins etc. It’s the book for you

A Decent Introduction to Typography, But There are Better Alternatives
Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton is a good book to introduce someone to typography, or as a reference book to refresh yourself on something if you're working on a project. It covers the basics and will help you develop professional practices and terminology in the field. But there are some things I would consider.First, there are other books about this subject that, while not as easy to read, are more informative and robust and, therefore, would serve the reader better than this one. I would recommend Typographic Design: Form and Communication (I have the sixth edition, but I think it's on 7 or 8 now). That book gives you a more comprehensive look at the history of typography and of typography overall. It's also denser and not as accessible though. Thinking In Type by Alex White is also a good book, though it suffers from being aesthetically deficient in its design (ironically). Design Elements (3rd edition) by Timothy Samara also has an excellent section on typography and is a book worth looking into, as is A Type Primer (3rd edition) by John Kane.Second, and the main reason I gave this book less than five stars, is that Ellen Lupton is unfortunately a bit too woke for my liking. Teaching in a book that we must be careful about what punctuation symbols we use so as to be gender inclusive is ridiculous. The following is a quote from page 78 on the topic of punctuation:"Inclusive language matters because speaking and writing shape our understanding of the world. Using 'man' to represent everyone erases women. Upholding the male/female binary erases people with other gender identities."Using 'man' to refer to a group or humanity as a whole erases women? Really? Like they cease to exist unless the word "woman" is written on a page somewhere or something? Isn't it more insulting to women to imply they aren't intelligent enough to understand they're included when people say "mankind" or some similar statement? And as regards the male/female binary distinction, we have that distinction because that's the way reality actually is. Male and female are the only sexes, and there's no such thing as multiple genders. Now, I want to be fair here. I'm disagreeing with something Ellen Lupton has written, but I'm not saying she's a terrible person or a bad educator (I don't know her personally at all, she may be lovely to spend time with). But what I am saying is that educators have a responsibility to teach and share the truth, and part of this book fails miserably. And she's quite right that speaking and writing shape the way we see the world. That's what makes this gender issue even worse, because it's trying to change the way we articulate and can communicate truth. Not good. Not good at all.But the book still receives 4 stars because it is, after all, a typography book, and it does help with typography. But if you're one of the people who employs the use of common-sense and disagrees with the aggressively anti-common-sense view that is wokeness, then you'll need to read this book critically. You should read everything critically, but I digress. All in all, Thinking with Type is a good book for typography for the most part, but the others I mentioned are just as good or better, and without the nonsensical politics attached.
