I loved this book!
I loved this book and the opportunity to find out more about Claire Clairmont, who I knew next to nothing about, before I picked up this novel. The story features three timelines, the summer of 1816 when Claire is holidaying in a villa on Lake Geneva with Percy Bysshe Shelley and his soon to be wife, Claire’s half-sister, Mary, with Byron in a nearby villa, as a governess in Russia in 1825 and then as an older women in Paris in 1843. We see Mary, Shelley and Byron through Claire’s eyes but also the different ways each of them pushes her aside or fails to support her and ultimately does not ‘hear what she wants to tell’. Lesley McDowell’s beautifully written, atmospheric novel tries and succeeds in redressing this and left me keen to find out more about Claire’s life.Lesley McDowell is also a very visual writer and I could easily picture this as a BBC/Netflix TV series. A great read!
