Review: Excellent - Great read, in the style of Jane Austen but more satirical. Well worth a read. Review: Scotland's answer to Jane Austen. - A very interesting and well-crafted novel, giving insight into the period. I can see why Ferrier has been described as Scotalnd's Jane Austen.

Three Stars
Rather dull!

of historical interest...
verbose, convoluted, time consuming, with a myriad of digressions...suitable for idle middle-class readers, with lots of empty hours to fill...there are several germs of good stories in there, covered with many layers of prose and poetry...of historical interest only, i am afraid...

This is a fantastic story, a surprise in how much I enjoyed it. The writing is very different to what you will find today, but it is so very beautifully done. I go to it on my ereader and just read snippets to go back to the scenes.

Amusing and well drawn characters but tends to have incredibly lengthy discourses for them and never ending commentaries usually on their moral or religious behaviours. A good tale which gives a feel for the era but with surprisingly little descriptions of surroundings, dress etc and no balls!

This book spoke to my minamilistic tendencies in its morals. The first half of this book was incredibly frustrating. I was so cranky with Lady Julianna and annoyed with her husband for not standing up to her. And the long winded speeches by the ridiculous aunts and Lady MacLaughlan, my amusement in these ran out very quickly. They put me in mind of Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice and once you have read one or two of their speeches you know that you don't really need to read anymore as they having nothing to add to the story and so I skim read nearly everything they said. However, I enjoyed the second half of the story when Mary becomes the central character. I also really enjoyed Lady Emily's wit and her descriptions of her less pleasant acquaintances. Her relationship with Mary was great. I could have really liked Colonel Lennox but he didn't get enough chance to speak and there was not enough conversation between him and Mary. All in all it was alright but not something I would re-read.
