Not quite the typical history
Interesting style of writing. However, a book with no page numbering. Quite a phenomenon.

Interesting but limited
Interesting book, but too many a typical nationalistic 19th Century author, not very neutral. Concerning the military operations it's very generic, in my view. I was mainly interested in the Middle Ages wars against the Hapsburg, and it covers them, but you need to complete the topic.

Rich in history, poorly executed.
No glossary, index, table of contents, sources or page numbers.Have never seen anything like it, in that regard.-As the title implies, it's clearly a state book. The Swiss are always the heroes, everyone else the villains.-The enlightenment undertones are so thick, you'd think it was an American state book; which is actually interesting, for one studying such things.-But with all that said TONS of things to look up and learn, if one really wanted to understand the history of the Swiss.I must admit, I've read enough of European history to be able to identify with events listed, from the Hapsburg/Bourbon/Savoy perspectives, so it is very interesting. But I would never recommend this book as an 'introduction to reading about European history'.This book is for people who already have their feet in the water.

A very Detailed history of Switzerland, it's people and upheaval.
I was looking for a book on the History of Switzerland to help me understand what was going on when my ancestors came to America. This is a well documented informational history on the land, people and languages. It covers the time period from BC 100 up to 1848 by the original author, with a continuation to the year 1948 by Emil Zschokke. It was originally printed in 1855 {M.DCCC.LV}. It covers the history from Roman Dominion, German domination, being ruled by an Emporor, story of William Tell, history of religion through the Centuries, Languages used and the times they were used, many battles for freedom that were fought,The Black Death (AD 1603-1618), The Thirty Year Religious War,The destruction of the Old Confederacy, The entrance of the French into the land (AD 1797-1798), Napoleon Buonaparte's role (1803-1813), and the quarrels and turmoils & Revolutions in the 1800's. A great informational historical. Good for Genealogical research and historical information.
