Excellent Book.
This is great book on Meeting facilitation. Quick short and up to the point. I bought it as an audible book. It is useful enough; I plan on buying the kindle version. I plan on implementing the ideas author gives and creating checklist for Agile coaches and scrum masters in my organization to follow. If you want a deeper dive into facilitation, you may do well to read Michael Wilkinsons book 'The Secrets of Facilitation', which gives an expanded framework to facilitate any type of event.

A reference guide to transform dull, unproductive meetings into engaging events
This book offers a practical guide for professionals who transform dull, unproductive meetings into engaging events that drive participation, collaboration, and results. Jeff Shannon draws from over 20 years of experience studying and leading meetings to provide actionable advice on how to design, plan, and facilitate highly effective meetings. The core premise of the book is that engagement is vital - if you want an engaging meeting, you must engage people. Shannon outlines the common pitfalls that undermine engagement in meetings, including lack of clear purpose, unclear agenda, lack of participation, and lack of accountability. He then provides a step-by-step approach to address these issues through careful meeting design, planning, and facilitation techniques. A key contribution of the book is the concept of the "meeting brief" - a short planning document that clarifies context, purpose, desired outcomes, and other elements. Shannon advocates investing 15 minutes in building the meeting brief to set yourself up for success. The book covers best practices for choosing meeting times, setting agendas focused on critical questions, determining appropriate participants and their roles, venue setup, and preparing materials to engage participants. Shannon stresses simple but impactful techniques like "call to action" emails to get participants primed before the meeting starts. A sizeable portion of the book focuses on facilitating engaging meetings, including providing signposts, using small groups, asking good questions, validating contributions, and troubleshooting common problems like rabbit holes. Tips on leading virtual and hybrid meetings are also provided. The book concludes with best practices for wrapping up meetings, capturing follow-up actions, and driving accountability after the meeting concludes. Shannon reminds readers that meetings don't truly end when people leave the room - follow-up is critical. What I liked: 1. Inclusion of frameworks and templates (I’ve included 3 of my favorite templates from the book.): - FOCUS Framework for Decision-Making Meetings - Template Meeting Brief - What Undermines Engagement? 2. The book reads and sounds like authentic Jeff. I know Jeff and have been a part of his meetings. This book is a factual representation of how Jeff conducts himself. 3. The book can be used as a reference guide. Overall, Lead Engaging Meetings delivers on its promise as a practical guide to boosting participation and effectiveness of meetings. While the advice skews toward workshops and longer team meetings, many of the techniques can be applied to shorter daily meetings as well. The book is cleanly organized, highly actionable, and rich in real-world experience. Anyone looking to improve their meeting leadership skills will benefit tremendously from reading and applying this book.

When it comes to meetings at work that I need to run I always felt as though it went bad when they finish. This book has helped me so much with structuring my meetings, keeping notes, being well prepared, and maintaining momentum after the meeting through achievable actions that add meaningful value. My daughter is a private school teacher in London and has to run meetings with colleagues and flicked through my book when visiting one day. She found it so useful that I purchased a copy for her and she now uses it as her default go to for information for her meetings. Highly recommended indeed.
