"Fear of the Devil's visitations was stronger than the fear of God"
Written in 1842 by a Swiss pastor, this short novel opens at a christening feast; the author evokes the scenery, the friendly neighbours and the sunshine. But as the host shows the guests around his new house, one queries why an ugly black window post is there. And therein hangs an ancient tale which the host relates; dating to many years ago, when the villagers, oppressed by a ruthless knight, enter into a pact with the devil to assist with their labours...The reader will soon see Biblical parallels in the characters, from independently minded Christine (a latter-day Eve) , who takes it upon herself to promise the Devil the price he demands to the meek and self-sacrificing Christen...Fair, but I wouldn't read it again.
