I expected that a so-called medical device would be better made. The slide for the movable caliper has so much play in it that the measurements are as much as 3/4 of an inch off. There should be a nylon or plastic glide.

does the job not as sturdy as I would like

items as described, large set of calipers and they seem to be very well made.
