Product Description Blu-ray + DVD. Set in the alternate Edo-period Japan, an alien race from outer space have invaded the country and taken control, forcing the once powerful Samurai to lay down their swords. Once feared as the White Demon, former samurai Gintoki Sakata, works as an everyday handyman until a master swordsman tasks Gintoki and his friends with finding a cursed sword to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Packed with the sword-swinging sci-fi action and offbeat humor, Gintama is a journey through a visually-stunning universe where fantastical action lurks around every corner. Language: Japanese (original). Subtitles: English. Review "The Gintama Live-Action film is as fun as it is faithful" --AnimeNow Review: A must-have for any Gintama fan - A must-buy for any fan of Gintama. Definitely get the blu-ray version because it comes with the blu-ray and the DVD format (so, two discs). It comes with a really nice sleeve, as well. The movie itself is kind of mediocre, even for a Gintama fan. Don't expect it to be as good as the manga or the anime, of course. But nonetheless, it is a fairly faithful recreation of the Benizakura arc from the main series. For the most part, the cast is really great. Some of the actors look really close to how their characters are supposed to look while others don't as much, but it's still a fun movie. It's nice to see one of the greatest fictional series in the world gaining so much popularity, especially considering they've been cancelled as many times as Futurama. The biggest downside to this movie is that it doesn't come with any extra. No director commentary (although we wouldn't be able to understand it, anyway), no "behind the scenes," no bloopers or deleted scenes. A real disappointment in that category. But it's still worth getting if you really love the series just to show support for it. Also get the Gintama Rumble videogame while you're at it! (Once it isn't so expensive, anyway) Review: Five Stars - Japanese Fantasy and Humor prevail through this live action adaption. Worth repeat viewing and sharing with friends.

Great movie
A bit different in some aspects to the anime but it was good. Also, check out Bleach live action. I think it was pretty cool as well

A surprising action packed, comedic, Sci-Fi, sword-fighting gem of a movie!
Never heard of this before, guess it's based on a manga? I liked the movie....lots of action, comedy (even if you have to read it in english subtitles), a surprising deep plot....I was very impressed! Usually I keep my ear to the ground to find classics like this, but glad I found it!

Fast-paced blend of action and comedy...
“Gintama," based on the best-selling action comedy manga by Hideaki Sorachi, takes place in an alternate Ido-Period Japan where an alien race has taken control, forcing Samurai to lay down their swords. Once feared as the White Demon, former samurai Gintoki Sakata now works as an everyday handyman until a master swordsman tasks Gintoki and his friends with finding the cursed sword Benizakura to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. “Gintama” combines period drama with science fiction, and broad comedy with melodrama about resisting the enemy, greed, and the shaky bond of childhood friendship. By not taking itself too seriously, it achieves a somewhat troublesome tone. Translating anime to live action works with the action sequences, with all the tools and special effects of cinema enhancing what was on the printed page. It’s less successful, however, in its portrayal of sidekick Elizabeth, who’s supposed to be a penguin but is clearly a guy in a penguin suit. In this instance, the film pokes fun at itself rather than trying to convince viewers of the quirky “casting.” There’s lots of physical slapstick comedy with characters making open references to other manga properties even as they call out poor effects work and even reading the very comic in which their own story is published. The genre of “gag manga” is characterized by crudeness and broad comedy, which “Gintama” attempts to replicate. One character, for instance, is a small but powerful alien adept at consuming and vomiting huge quantities of food, all graphically shown. Though overlong at over 2 hours, the film is fun and provides lots of laughs. There are no bonus materials on the unrated 2-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack. The widescreen film is in Japanese, with optional English subtitles.

Very faithful to the source material, I really enjoyed it. The only thing I'll mention for the Gintama fans is that it's Benizakura. It would have been nice if it was all original but it was still very good! It was very well cast and CG Sadoharu is the cutest thing ever.
