Battery powered lawn tools have come a long way
Hitting my mid-30s, I became a bit of a curmudgeon when it came to yard work. I grew tired of all the noisy, unreliable, gas-powered equipment that constantly broke down. I decided to go full Luddite, swapping out my old tools for quieter, more reliable options like a 21-inch push-reel mower, a grass whip, and a long-handle scythe. These tools work great for most of my yard (though they certainly take a lot more time and effort!), which is just shy of 2 acres, but there are always those tricky spots near the vinyl siding or in tight corners that demand something more precise. That’s where the Greenworks 80V weed whacker comes in. It’s whisper quiet—quieter than my wife’s 20V and 40V weed whackers that are about 6 years old, and even quieter than my push-reel mower, which is absolutely insane that they managed to make the power tool that quiet! The battery lasts a solid 20-25 minutes of continuous (trigger down the entire time on the boost setting) use, even on thick, lush shade grass, and the same battery can power the blower afterward. Cleaning is easy, though there's a bit of a tricky spot where the guard connects to the shaft that gets grass debris wedged in there (yes I clean my tools after use, it's how you get them to last). The weed whacker is lightweight, easy to handle, and the auto-feed works well.I also use the battery-powered mower, which is well thought out and plenty powerful for typical suburban yard work (my yard is definitely not suburban and is too big for a battery mower). The grass clippings bag is easy to use and well-constructed, making clean-up simple. However, the mower is surprisingly loud—certainly not as loud as a gas mower, but louder than I expected after running the whisper-quiet weed whacker. The leaf blower, on the other hand, is surprisingly loud for a battery-powered tool and underpowered for the amount of noise it makes. It’s decent for light tasks but doesn’t quite meet my expectations in terms of power. The whacker works ok for dry grass but can't really blow other weeds around much, so it usually sits in favor of the rake or my 120v plug in blower. That said, having two batteries to swap between the weed whacker, mower, and blower is incredibly convenient, reducing downtime between tasks.Despite the blower's shortcomings, the reliability and quiet performance of the weed whacker and mower have made yard work something I actually enjoy. It’s good exercise, and the peaceful operation of these tools has turned a once-dreaded chore into a much more pleasant experience.

Battery-powered technology has finally arrived
--- Pros ---- As capable as any gas-powered mower- Automatically revs up in taller or denser grass- Easy, one-handed adjustment for the deck height- Three handle positions help hit the sweet spot for walking behind the mower, depending on your height- Battery lasts a surprisingly long time, up to 45 minutes to an hour, plus it recharges quickly- Excellent mulching with the added option to side discharge if the grass is very tall or dense- Large-ish rear wheels for maneuverability and getting around/over obstacles--- Cons ---- Self-propelled feature is a bit fast for my typical pace, even at the lowest setting- Blade misses a few grass leaves every now and then, but I probably have the cutting height set too low--- Background Info & Buying Rationale ---I have been mowing with various push, self-propelled, and riding mowers since I was 10 years old. 4-stroke gas, 2-stroke gas, plug-in electric, old, new, rebuilt, hand-me-down, pulled from a trash heap...you name it.Since I am now in my mid-40s and we recently moved to a new house with larger front and back yards, I needed some "assistance" to keep the grass at a reasonable level. My wife and I considered stepping up to an electric riding mower, but since I split mowing the front and back yards every other week (rather than tackling them both on the same day), we could not justify the price or necessary garage storage space based on our limited acreage.I previously used a lightweight Greenworks 20" 13 amp plug-in mower at our old house, which easily fit my needs for five to seven, maintenance-free years. I only changed the blade on it once. The only issue with it, however, had always been cord maintenance. Having to cut in certain patterns, detangling it from around objects, avoiding electrocution by not accidentally running over it. You get the picture.I had also avoided previous battery-powered mowers because the power output and charging capabilities were simply not enough for my needs at the time. This 80 volt, battery-powered model changes all that, though, with the added benefit of also being self-propelled. I reasoned that if the overall running time was not sufficient then I could buy a spare battery as a backup, which has proven to be unnecessary.I mention all these factors to simply state that this is the best mower I have used in my 35+ years of lawn care. It is powerful, dependable, smooth running, quiet, well designed and nearly effortless to use.--- TL;DR Version ---If you are ready to ditch gas-powered mowers and all the maintenance headaches that come along with them, I highly recommend buying this mower.
