Storyboard - The Complete Series

Brilliant anthology series of single plays that would serve as pilots for potential future series
Storyboard is a highly regarded anthology series of single plays produced by Thames Television from 1983 to 1989. These plays would serve as pilots for possible future series, for example Woodentop (produced and aired in 1983) would serve as the pilot for The Bill, the series which ran from 1984 to 2010. The DVD set also contains a play called Singles Night which, although part of the Storyboard anthology, was shown outside the series banner so that play doesn't have the Storyboard opening titles appear like the other plays do (Singles Night is included as a special feature which is on disc two so that all the stories are presented on DVD in chronological order).Despite having never seen any of these plays before (apart from the King & Castle pilot from 1985 as I bought series 1 and 2 of that show in 2012), I thought these plays were very impressive and entertaining to watch. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the single plays featured here, although I didn't quite find Ladies in Charge as entertaining as the other plays (I didn't dislike that play, it's just that it didn't entertain me as much as the other ones did, maybe it's because it was a period-set play - Ladies in Charge was one of only two plays in this series that was period-set, the other one was Hunted Down which was based on a short story by Charles Dickens). Not all of these single plays went on to become future series, but the following ones did:(1) Woodentop, which went on to serve as the pilot for The Bill, as I already mentioned earlier;(2) The Traitor, which was the pilot for Mr Palfrey of Westminster - another linked play titled A Question of Commitment, along with The Traitor, features on the Mr Palfrey of Westminster DVD set, also released by Network. Despite the link between these two plays, Alec McCowen did not feature as Mr Palfrey in A Question of Commitment like he did in The Traitor and Mr Palfrey of Westminster;(3) Lytton's Diary, which starred Peter Bowles as Neville Lytton. This play went on to serve as the pilot for the series of the same name;(4) King & Castle, the 1985 pilot that starred Derek Martin as Ronald King and Nigel Planer as David Castle. King & Castle went on to be commissioned for two series, the first series was aired in 1986 and the second series was aired in 1988;(5) Ladies in Charge, which went on to serve as the pilot for the series of the same name;(6) Making News, which was about a fictional news channel simply titled The News Channel (or TNC for short). This single play also went on to serve as the pilot for the series of the same name.Overall, I very highly recommend the Storyboard anthology series as it shows how programmes like The Bill and King & Castle got started.

You're Better Served with Armchair Theater on Network, Than This Lot....
Interesting, but not the best assortment of teleplays. Quite frankly, a mixed bag despite the number of high caliber actors contained within, like Alfred Burke, whose work in the acclaimed Public Eye is nothing short of genius. The fan of British drama would be much better served with Armchair Theater and the Armchair Thriller DVDs available from Network.

Not much help here. Sorry.
I bought this for two shows the go with another series I bought. Other than that I've not really given this much attention, so I can't not give it 5-stars, but yet can also not comment on the collection. Sorry for that. It was a bit expensive for what it is, though.
