Masterton's best books are Manitou books
I've decided that Masterton's best books are Manitou books, its very clear from the style, pace and (positively interesting) digressions or departures that he really loves the topical matter driving the story along. This is the return of the greatest of all wonder working medicine men from the earlier bookΒ The Manitou Β and he is still ready to exact grim bloody vengence upon the white man for his historical wrongs. I believe that fans of the earlier book will be pleased with this offering but anyone who is unfamiliar with the earlier book could enjoy it just as much. There are references to the earlier book but they are succinct and slight, just enough to make for the inclusion of some characters from the earlier book. Of the two I think this is the better book, although the other was very unique in its combination of medical mystery turned spiritualist horror. This book features a number of themes common to a lot of Masteron's books, the things which frighten people from their childhoods and throughout their lives even, peoples capacity to deny the mysterious or astounding even when they have the immediate evidence of their own witness and the ambivalence with which supernatural things are perceived. For the greater part of this book the horror eminates not from gruesome or brutal slayings (I did think there was a lot less in this book than the earlier Manitou book or even other books such as The Demons of D Day or Wells of Hell) but from being disbelieved and helpless while your loved ones are preyed upon.As is something I've noticed about Masteron's books, he has such a talent at building up to the conclusion of the book that, while still pleasing enough, it does become a bit of an anti-climax, the monsters or spooks seem to manifest unassailable powers and everyone ought to be finished but it isnt so. Its a minor, minor detraction from some truly page turning reading though, like the other Manitou book this one strongly draws upon Native American/Indian magic for its content but I think that, like other Masterton books, there is a little of the Cthulu mythos/HP Lovecraft's Elder Gods and beasties here too.Great diverting fiction. Much better than a lot of the those horror or thriller writers who are topping the bills.

A great follow up
Sequel to tbe Manitou and worthy of the title. In some ways I prefer it. Very easy to read. Great selection of vengeful Indian demons and good strong characters including the sarcastic Singing Rock and the semi charlatan Harry Erskine. Have read this several times and thorougjly enjoyed it. This is Masterton at his best.
