Kintsugi (golden joinery) is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Lacquerware is a longstanding tradition in Japan, at some point it may have been combined with maki-e as a replacement for other ceramic repair techniques. I love this philosophy. I got one of these Kintsugi sets for a Christmas gift, and an extra one for me 😉 It looks beautiful and I'm stoked to save this bowl!It was easy to do and very fun, I highly recommend it.

J’ai reçu ce produit bien emballé, avec un mode d’emploi clair et tout le nécessaire, dans un emballage agréable. Je l’ai aussitôt déballé et ai réparé une soucoupe cassée en 3 pourceaux, et, en étant minutieux et calme, le résultat est tout à fait convaincant. Je recommande !

I fell in love with the concept of Kintsugi a while ago, but never seemed to find the right support to master this beautiful craft myself. Until CHIYU came along.The guidelines are super clear and useful, especially if you want it done correct. Over the last couples of months I have brought back lots of cups (and others) to live, given "my time and energy" as presents to loved ones, and the final word from everyone is that it simply works. And looks beautiful. Ànd even stays leak-proof after dishwashing the items, more than once, *ìf done right*. The trick is to make sure that the glue stays even in thickness over the whole line to be repaired - when the glue is applied too thin in a spot it will (naturally) start to wear out after dishwashing it several times. So I advice to start out by reading the guidelines, follow them step by step, and enjoy the process of making the imperfect perfect. Added pictures represent a couple of my artworks; reviews of the process as well as of the final products.Added bonus: the people behind it are super nice and responsive. They'll help you with all kinds of questions and dilemma's, relating the product. ;-) I am super grateful.This should easily score at least 6/5 stars for me. :-)

Deze set van Chiyu is een pareltje om te ontvangen, prachtige vormgeving en stijvol ingepakte tools! Ik vind het positief dat de producten voedselveilig zijn en de lijm biobased is.Met het instructieboekje en de video heb ik een gebroken voorwerp gemakkelijk kunnen herstellen, het proces is duidelijk uitgelegd, je moet zeker zorgzaam en met geduld te werk gaan!Het eindresultaat is heel mooi en met de inhoud van de box kan ik nog meer items herstellen, ik kijk er al naar uit. Een aanrader!

I'm a human wrecking ball when it comes to china and ceramics, and I'm just as bad with glassware. I've never managed to keep a single complete set of anything. I'd finally accepted my fate and started buying single unmatched items (or melamine...) but then I broke a particularly beloved mug and wondered about kintsugi repairs. None of the products I found were food-safe and then I spotted this one. I did my first repair today and even with my limited craft skills, it looks pretty good.Time will tell if the mug will stand up to my normal handling, i.e. careless, but this kit does what it claims.Pros:1. Easy to mix and apply – I was worried that my lack of skill and general tendency to over-glue things would ruin this, but it's very forgiving and it's meant to ooze out unevenly to get that look.2. You get enough materials for quite a few uses. (And the gloves are really good quality.) Good value.3. Excellent instructions and video – very easy to follow.4. The gold powder is a convincing colour. It's amazing how the metallic look comes to life when you buff the powder across the surface to finish off the repair.5. The resin seems to be strong enough to re-attach a handle as well as cementing chunks of the mug wall. (Yes, that mug landed hard.)6. Pretty little package – it would make a super gift.Not so much cons as cautions:1. Mica powder. If you think glitter gets everywhere, you haven't seen mica on the loose. Handle with respect or you'll be wiping gold dust off everything for weeks.2. I would have preferred two separate tubes for the resin components. The double-barrelled dispenser is very clever, but with my dubious dexterity, I'm fairly sure I didn't manage to dispense equal amounts.Overall, I love this kit. I could have saved quite a few precious objects if I'd known about it sooner. And of course I'm now looking for more things to repair. If you're accident-prone, you might as well flaunt it.
