The surfer, filmmaker and middle-of-the-road acoustic songwriter has never pushed any creative envelopes with his pleasantly forgettable fare, yet his last two albums were UK number ones. Neither Sleep Through the Static (2008) nor In Between Dreams (2005) received much in the way of praise from the music press, but Johnson is in the same mould as Katie Melua: a musician whose fortunes appear impervious to negative reviews, rendering opinions expressed in pieces such as this absolutely irrelevant. Indeed, such is the armour plating surrounding Johnson’s material that one wonders, while one writes, what the point is of even penning a review that won’t influence a potential buyer’s decision. The conclusion: to be objective, to relay the globally significant background of To the Sea and what’s to follow. That the album follows in the sonic footsteps of what’s come before should go without saying (whoops), and that it’s as challenging as committing a felony in a Grand Theft Auto video game (not very) is another needless statement of abject obviousness. But what’s not apparent from these songs is just how brilliant a man their maker is. Not musically, you understand. Jack Johnson realises his strengths, limited as they are, and plays to them. Should he ever stretch himself as a musician the results could be fascinating – think The Beach Boys before Pet Sounds, and what they felt capable of afterwards – but right now he’s operating in a comfort zone that should guarantee continued commercial success. But here’s where the brilliant bit comes in: he doesn’t need the money. All profits from touring this record, all around the world, are to go to charities supporting the environment and the arts. He will strive to offset all carbon emissions. He even recorded this in two solar-powered studios. The music might be lightweight, but Johnson is a man on a serious mission, and should be applauded accordingly. Johnson’s behaviour, his philanthropy and awareness-raising activities in the name of saving this world, should stir other globally known and financially stable artists into doing similar. Pretty though these songs occasionally are – even the harshest critic must concede that My Little Girl and Anything But the Truth are lovely – they’re of secondary importance to their creator’s enthusiasm in other, more important areas. It’s enough to have one forgiving the prevalent listlessness of the man’s catalogue, almost. --Mike Diver

Classic Jack Johnson
If you like Jack Johnson, you will like this album. There are three or four stand out tracks for me with the rest being his usual background music style, in my opinion!Definitely worth a buy.

Have all the other Jack Johnson albums and this one does not disappoint. Higher tempo than some of the others, it still has all the classic Jack Johnson riffs. highly recommended for any Jack Johnson fan.

Wer Jack Johnson kauft bekommt eben Jack Johnson
Ich bin positiv überrascht.Jack Johnson setzt auch hier auf bewerte Mittel und seit Sleep through the Static gesellt sich dazu eben der Umfang einer Band.Das funktioniert bekanntlich mal besser (If I had eyes), und mal wünscht man sich den alten Jack (good old Jack) mit seiner Klampfe zurück. Die Weiterentwicklung eines Künstlers hängt meistens mit einem größeren musikalischen Verständnis zusammen, bei dem man alle Möglichkeiten ausschöpfen möchte (frei nach dem Paul McCartney Motto, wenn ich die Phillamonie will, dann hol ich mir sie halt ins Studio). Für mich macht das meistens eher das besondere an einem Künstler kaputt, wenn man so will seine Identität. Gerade im Fall Jack Johnson schien mir das die falsche Klamotte zu sein. (Auch der heutige McCartney funktioniert aus dem Grund der Überproduktion nicht mehr so richtig)Wenn man viele Zutaten in eine Suppe schmeisst, schmeckt die Suppe eben irgendwann nicht mehr anders, als alle anderen Suppen.Bei "Sleep Through The Static" haben mich vorallem die Texte und auch der starke Beginn des Albums zu fesseln gewusst.(Am Ende waren es einfach zu viele Songs, wobei viele halt etwas dahingeschmettert wirkten).Bei "To the Sea" geht es hingegen wieder etwas ungezwungener zu und die Bandmittel scheinen natürlicher in das Jack Johnson Paket zu passen. Man darf nun von Jack Johnson keinen Punk oder Hard Rock erwarten. Es ist die logische Weiterentwicklung. Jack Johnson wird immer mehr zur Band, in der auch ein knackiges Bluesgitarrensolo auf der E-Gitarre nicht fehlen darf.Fazit:Einige schöne Hits, ein paar Lückenfüller und am Ende ertappe ich mich trotzdem verträumt am Strand sitzend. Da ich positiv überrascht bin, adde ich noch einen unneutralen Stern hinzu, auch wenn das hier vorliegende Werk immer noch das schwächste Jack Johnson Album ist.

Perfekte Musik auf perfektem Tonträger
Eigentlich ist die Musik von Jack Johnson ja immer noch ein Geheimtipp, selten im Radio zu hören und bei vielen noch nicht im Gedächtnis. Ohne seine Musik wäre mein Musik Kosmos um eineiges kleiner. Hier präsentiert er sich etwas "rockiger", es wird stellenweise gejammt und seiner sonst so ruhigen Gitarre einiges abverlangt.Auf jeden Fall ein Kauftipp auf Vinyl, schwere und ordentliche Qualität. Einwandfrei und klanglich der CD überlegen, dynamisch und frisch. So muss das sein und so will man das auf Platte haben.Besonderer Anspieltipp auf Vinyl ist der 3te Track auf der ersten Seite: No Good with Faces. Kommt auf CD nicht so klanglich rüber wie auf der LP, einfach schön.Es sind 13 Tracks auf der LP vorhanden, gleiche Reihe wie auf CD. Daher keine Abweichung und auch kein Bonus für LP Fans. MP3 Download Coupon ist wie immer dabei, aber wer tut sich das schon freiwillig an :)

"To the Sea" ist ein typisches Album von Jack Johnson! Die Musik lädt ein zum Genießen, Träumen und Relaxen. Es hat eine gewisse Leichtigkeit und man kann die hawaiianische Lebensart spüren.

Jack Johnson macht eine beruhigende gutelaune Musik. Habe mir nach der 1. gehörten CD 3 weitere bestellt.Höre sie allerdings lieber zu Hause als im Auto, geschmacksache.

Sin duda este album de Jack Johnson me ha sorprendido. Esta lleno de canciones que después de escucharlas dos o tres veces encuentras magia alli. Excelente música para poner mientras vas a la playa. Es alegre, con brillos, con mar tranquilo y mucho sol. Se disfruta de principio a fin.
