Belladonna of Sadness 4K UHD

It's not for everyone (very explicit as it is unique)
This movie is a good movie for multiple reasons. One of them being the art and the color choices; I'm not an artist nor am I some sort of movie/media critic, but the art style and colors, along with the change of saturation throughout the movie is perfect. It helps carry the emotion and the true feelings of not only the main characters' emotions, but also the whole village itself. To add a bit of flair, the music, like most people have mentioned in other reviews, is very late 60s/early 70s, which I feel compliments this movie greatly. The style it's done in as well, helps complete the movie overall. I'm not really sure why people think this movie in "incomplete", I feel like the simplicity yet eclectic art style they've chosen for this whole movie is fantastic. I suppose if you're not into "arty" films, this one simply isn't for you. It's also worth mentioning that some people might consider this a "slow burner", which I could see that in a couple parts of the movie. Overall though, it carries itself pretty well.Yes, there's limited animated scenes to standstill scenes, but that doesn't make this movie boring or bad. It's simply not for everyone. This movie is graphic and at some moments emotionally draining, but it's a great watch; there's most definitely a reason for the title. This movie is unlike most anime's and animated movies and that's why it's killer. Not to compliment this movie too much, but it's definitely worth sparing some time for this unique experience. The beginning will test you, but it's definitely worth it! it's a 10/10 for me.

Epilepsy Warning: Heaving Strobe Effects
Everyone else is inclined to warn about the content, even though that's right in the description. But somehow neither Amazon nor previous reviewers mention the strobe effects, so I will. They occur in at least three sequences. Games carry warnings by default nowadays, yet they rarely have anything like this. The movie is worth watching for the art alone. It's practically unique, even if it feels more French than Japanese (not just the story; the art style too). It's more of a trip than Yellow Submarine.

Stunning piece of adult traditional animation: psychedelic, heavy, and stylistic. A must watch for animators and artists.
I'm not sure how else to describe this movie other than visually orgasmic, psychedelic, and thematically heavy. I went into this as a friends recommendation not knowing anything about the plot. I won't spoil it, but I thought the beautiful watercolor imagery worked beautifully with the voice acting and narration of the story as well as the almost doomy orchestral music. If you are into watercolor, psychedelic imagery and music, witchcraft, female empowerment, please watch this. I will absolutely watch it again, and I only wish the art book wasn't $200+ or I would absolutely buy that. This is NOT a movie for children: there is nudity, sex, mentions of rape, blood, and witchcraft. The themes are for adults without question. If you enjoy traditional animation, watch this. If the art and fashion and style of the 70's appeals to you, watch this. If you're looking for something to watch in the background while you're working, don't watch this.

That was a thing, alright. That was definitely a thing.
I was about ready to give up on 'Belladonna of Sadness' in its first half: most of the artwork was disappointingly still (as in literally camera pans over still watercolor paintings), and it had the uncomfortable trope shared by a lot of adult animation that openly laments the degradation of women while (with the exception of one early, brilliantly harrowing image) seemingly going out of its way to make it look extremely hot and titillating...But about halfway through, the movie suddenly goes completely, wonderfully bonkers (as well as very, VERY animated) in exactly the way you hoped it would and then some. It may well be that my frustration with the first half of the movie was entirely intentional, though I can't really tell you what it all means or if it's even necessarily supposed to mean anything beyond conjuring up emotions and sensations (I'll note that, if I'm interpreting it correctly, the ending might be the most blasphemous thing I've ever seen committed to film). I imagine this is probably the closest thing you can get to an acid trip while sober. As a trippy, animated Japanese arthouse take on a medieval European story and setting with funky 70s music and decidedly late 60s sensibility (now that I think of it, are we SURE John Lennon and Yoko Ono weren't somehow involved in the production?), it's guaranteed you won't see anything quite like 'Belladonna of Sadness', at the very least.

This is more hentai that anime for those wondering
I watched this for the art which is generally very stylistic of the late 60s early 70s illustration trend. However, some of the art and sequences visually make no sense because of a lack of stylistic consistency. Still fun visually. The story line is kinda weird and kinda hokey. The ending was just a double U tee eff.

EXTREMELY depressing - but at the same time very beautiful. The art is absolutely amazing
Absolutely not what I expected after watching the trailer - very dark, graphic, EXTREMELY depressing - but at the same time very beautiful. The art is absolutely amazing, the music is very stereotypical trippy late 60's/early 70's music - very chill yet disturbing with a lot of the scenes that are being portrayed, and the story itself is...interesting. Basically a woman being degraded to the end of the world and back, and coming back tenfold.I'm a little happy I went into this movie not knowing anything..the shock of seeing some of the scenes made for an interesting ride - but I'd give a warning to those that have experienced assault or rape before watching this, since some scenes were particularly hard to watch.

gorgeous animation. nsfw excessive nudity. but an absolute work of art nonetheless.
a literal work of art. content warning. tons of nudity & sexuality, but animated in such a masterful & simply gorgeous manner, that said sexuality is completely overshadowed by some of the most beautifully animated scenes in animation history.

amazing..
Ive never written a review before but I highly recommend this to anyone with an open mind. Its art style is unique and reminds me of The Tales of Princess Kaguya. The story is also beautiful and meaningful. I fell in love with this movie and I hope you will too!
