The complete series 1 to 4 of the cult 1960s espionage drama starring Patrick McGoohan as John Drake. Drake was a charismatic hard-man of a character with ostensibly little to empathise with, making the show a ground-breakingly realistic change from the heretofore highly 'acted' detective and spy roles. The series was the immediate precursor to the other cult series 'The Prisoner' which began when McGoohan quit having done only two episodes of Series 4 in 1968.

Danger Man
I have now completed watching this series from the sixties and can say that I very much enjoyed it. I must admit that at first I was a little disappointed as I hadn’t realised that the box set I’d purchased didn’t contain all of the Danger Man episodes. It contained only the 50 minutes episodes that start with Series 2 and end with the two colour episodes of Series 4. There were 47 episodes in total, but that still leaves 39, thirty-minute episodes from Series 1 that I still haven’t seen.As with most series that run for many episodes, there are some good and some not so good ones. I’m happy to say that with Danger Man most of the episodes are worth watching, though there are one or two that I found repetitive of early episodes, with only some variation between the stories. But these were few and far between. My favourite episodes from this box set (Series 2-4) included (not in any particular order) the following:Colony ThreeNot So Jolly RogerTo Our Best FriendNo Marks for ServilityWhatever Happened to George Foster?Such Men Are DangerousThe Ubiquitous Mr LovegroveSting in the TailLoyalty Always PaysThe Mirror’s NewYou’re Not in Any Trouble, Are You?Are You Going to be More Permanent? Most of these episodes differ from one another and I particularly liked the ones where Drake takes on a different persona, such as when he plays a butler in No Marks for Servility or an artist in Sting in the Tail, as well as the stranger type of episodes, almost emulating the later Prisoner, such as in Colony Three and The Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove. However, my favourite two episodes from the whole series were Colony Three and Not So Jolly Roger, though all of the above are very good. I also thought Loyalty Always Pays was wonderfully acted, with Drake in this episode playing an estate agent to a gullible Major Barrington played splendidly by Nigel Stock.I also enjoyed seeing actors from the past appearing in episodes (eg, Ralph Michael and Niall MacGinnis), as well as actors only just starting out on their careers (eg, Warren Mitchell, Paul Eddington and Denholm Elliott). The same was true of female actors like Lelia Goldoni (Fair Exchange and Two Birds with One Bullet), Ann Bell (To Our Best Friend), Patricia Haines and Jane Merrow. All in all, Danger Man is good entertainment and much better than most of what you currently see on TV today.I hope you find my review helpful.

Danger man, a bit tongue in cheek
I am pleased with the set but not completey. The audio is variable from episode to episode. Video quality is excellent, no problems at all. Its a bit hammy and as with The Saint, Drake has many fights yet his tie is always straight, his suit always looks new, and he never gets dirty. Backgrounds often look completely fake and car scenes are very obviously made in the studio. The same actors keep popping up in different roles throughout the series, all British and nearly all speaking in strange accents. Warren Mitchell and Mike Pratt play several parts for instance. I suppose I had forgotten just how hammy some 60s series were. The Fugitive by contrast is far superior with much better acting. McGoohan cant be faulted in any way and does a superb job as John Drake. One other thing we found annoying were the abrupt endings to many episodes. Obviously Drake gets away, but how, you dont see it happen. Not always easy to follow late at night after a couple of beers either. Having said that its a lot easier to follow than The Prisoner which takes a lot of following and leaves you the viewer to decide what its all about.

They don't make them like this any more!
This is 50 years old but so fresh. Danger Man is as good if not better than I remembered it. Wonderful!! Great entertainment and economic/brisk story telling with a twist in the tail. No episode works out quite like you expect it to, n.b."The Merceneries" and "That's two of us, sorry," are genuinely surprising unlike so many of today's dramas where you are usually two steps ahead of the characters and plot. Every fight scene is different - I know because I watched and checked them off. All, the action scenes (esp the train fight scene in Colony 3) are both tense and exciting. Just make allowances though for the "speeded up car chases" which are very much of their time and just enjoy the genuine period detail...you will never see Hyde Park Corner that quiet again.Technically, Excellent picture quality and sound. The B&W picture looks great on wide-screen high resolution, very crisp and the music is great.Lots of wonderful actors acting their socks off especially a terrific performance from Patrick McGoohan ...this part fitted him like a glove, he fills the screen effortlessly and there is a a tongue in check/quirky/dry humour to the dialogue and his delivery that you can just watch and enjoy time and again. So good that (gawd forgive me for saying this) it could be colourised and become a staple on ITV4. Buy this set.

Reminder of the Old days
I am only on the third disc and already I can say that this set of discs is worth the money for a view of Danger Man of all those years ago. I was only a child when the original 30min series was first broadcast and way past my bedtime and I only saw Danger Man as a very rare special treat. This is a realistic view of an agent at work without all the glamour and glib lines of the James Bond franchise, although there is a sprinkling of dry humour here and there. Highly watchable, even in black and white. It is quite fascinating to read the scripts on the disc and then watch the corresponding episode and see how the script was interpreted. And of course it is fun to see the scenes of old London as well! Highly recommended. MACB

BRILLANT!! THE 50 MINUTE EPISODES
A runaway success for ITC in the 1960s, Danger Man originally started as a half-hour series before hitting its stride with a transition to the fifty-minute format. This set contains all 47 fifty-minute shows (the last two in colour), charting the exploits of John Drake - an exemplary agent for British Intelligence who it sent into situations too tricky or dangerous for normal spies to undertake. McGoohan's simmering, compelling performance catapulted him into movies and paved the way for his undeniable your de force - The Prisoner.Danger Man features intriguing stories from top writers such as Ralph Smart, Donald Jonson, Philip Broadley and Tony Williamson, complemented by direction from stalwarts of the filmed action series genre such as Charles Crichton, Michael Truman, Peter Yates, Don Chaffey and even McGoohan himself. Showcasing all the hallmarks of the very best filmed ITC series, Danger Man features exceptional performances from guest stars such as Ian Hendry, Dawn Addams, Virginia Maskwell, Warren Mitchell, Sylvia Syms, Glyn Owen and Donald Houston.

Compatibility Alert!!!!
I order a lot of DVDs and I have never before missed a compatibility alert. I have never before ordered an incompatible DVD. I am finding it very hard to believe that the blazoned compatibility warning that is now on this product was there all along! I will have to return it when it gets here.
