Dead Set [DVD] [2008]

This is a review for "Dead Set" the episodes, NOT the DVD (and associated extra features) as it has not been released at the time of writing.Dead Set is a very respectable zombie horror. It is a classic tale of a small group of isolated survivors in the face of a zombie apocalypse. Whilst this is horror/drama it does not suffer from the common affliction of taking itself too seriously. There's plenty of black humour and lighter moments as a counterpoint to the scares and gore.The scenario borrows from Dawn of the Dead, with the survivors holed up in a secure compound (once they've dealt with the immediate threats). The twist is that the compound is the Big Brother house and the contestants are initially unaware that anything is wrong with the world outside. By the time they find out it is too late to do anything but sit tight!Another thing this has in common with the DotD remake is that the zombies in this are "new skool" running zombies (of the type first seen in 28 Days Later). This may upset some purists who insist that all zombies should be shamblers but fits perfectly with a modern day, fast paced scenario. The speed with which the infection spreads is frightening and the undead are like a pack of ravenous animals. With shuffling zombies it's usually sheer weight of numbers that overwhelm the heroes but with the visceral, panting, lightning fast beasts they are unnerving and dangerous individually and terrifyingly deadly in a group.Like all good zombie horrors, once the immediate danger of the undead is kept at bay, the danger then comes from internal conflict. With most of the survivors having already spent the best part of 2 months in each others' company tempers fray pretty quickly, leading to fatal consequences. Because this is the BB house the characters are mostly obnoxious, obscenely thick, gratingly annoying, utterly weird or infuriatingly arrogant (or a combination of several of those!). There is the risk that with such potentially dislikeable people as our survivors that we don't positively look forward to seeing them torn apart! However, the groups' humanity is kept intact by a few "normal" people and enough redeeming characteristics in the group as a whole to make us care about them.The acting is mostly convincing (although a couple of characters are deliberately OTT) and whilst there are a few moments that are unintentionally funny, most of it is believable (well... as much as a zombie apocalypse is believable anyway!).All in, this is a reputable stab at the horror genre by Charlie Brooker. There are some genuinely scary moments, a lot of tension and welcome comic relief. The prosthetics and make-up are all very convincing and gives the impression of it being much higher budget than it really is. I was going to give this 4 stars but genuinely couldn't find a reason not to give it that extra one. If you like zombies or horror then you shouldn't be disappointed.

OK....I know it's not a movie. Biggest mistake they made with this release is that they didn't allow you to play it as one movie. You used to be able to program your DVD player to play certain chapters to give the feeling of continuity. I think they missed a trick by not releasing this as a 2 and a half hour-ish movie. I still love it tho. But as this isn't a movie review site, merely a product review site, you can go to IMDB.

There are a few mistakes on Amazon's listing of "Dead Set (re-package) [DVD]:1) Product Details/ Product Description: It is NOT an "Uncut version" timing in at 160 minutes. It is the same length as the previous "version" (original package) at 141 minutes; I confirmed this by playing through the entire disc and timing it, plus its run time is stated as 141 on the back of the case. This 141 minutes includes each episode in its entirety, with opening/closing titles and the usual snippets of previous episodes which set up the current one.It would have been nice if these had been edited out for the "Play All" setting, with the episodes stitched together to make a feature length presentation. Unfortunately, one must be interrupted by the credits and snippets in order to progress to the next episode.There are deleted scenes, but these are not integrated into any of the episodes. Instead, they are part of the "Special Features" for each particular episode on each episode-specific menu.2) "From Amazon.co.uk": The last sentence of the second/last paragraph in this section says that "this text refers to an alternate DVD edition". It does not say from which edition or what information is being quoted from this "alternate DVD edition".3) "Product details: Format - PAL; Region - All Regions". This is noted on the back of the DVD case as well. While not a mistake, a caveat is required. Some DVD players for use in the US (Region 1) will play region-free PAL discs and others will not.I have a Region 1 (NTSC format) player which will play DVD-r, Region 0 PAL, etc., but not Region 2 PAL. I have two other Region 1 players which will NOT play anything other than Region 1 NTSC discs and a Region 1 Blu-ray player which is just as picky. I also have a region-free Blu-ray player which plays everything I have tried on it. Suggestion: Region-Free players are inexpensive and worth the money to allow viewers the opportunity/freedom to enjoy discs which may not have been released in the country or format in which the viewer lives.

THis is a great movie. I dont ever ever ever rate movies but this one stands out. Its actually a UK series...i think 5 episodes but they put it together like a movie. If u go to AmazonUK you can find the duel region dvd...meaning you can play it on region 1 & 2 dvd player. The US uses 1 & the UK uses 2 so that dvd will play on both. ITs totally worth it. Grat movie. Acting is superb. The story is great and the zombies r actually scary. I personally love the zombie genre and I admit there are alot of crap movies. But this one is great! Actually felt uneasy watching it. SO convincing. Must BUy!

I had heard a lot of good things about this 5-part mini-series, so I decided to give it a shot. I wasn't disappointed. Hands down, one of the bloodiest zombie films I've ever seen. The acting was top-notch and the writers did a great job building suspense and creating beliveable action and characters. My only complaint is I wish it was longer.I want to make mention that although this DVD set is only available at Amazon.uk for the European market, it played just fine on my blu-ray player here in the USA (region 1). The details list this as PAL, all regions.

Brings back memories when I was 18 - 19 when this was on tv

This 2008 5 part British miniseries set in the big brother reality series house. As the world is thrown into a zombie apocalypse, the people at the big brother house, the cast, the crew & audience members who are out in an isolated remote countryside have no idea the horror that's taking place throughout the world. That's until the nightmare shows up on their doorstep and quickly overtakes and overwhelms the unsuspecting. This fast pasted, suspenseful zombie thriller is truly gripping. As soon as you start you can't just watch one part and stop until later. You'll need to watch one right after another, so be prepared to binge.This dvd is in region 2 European zone format, so you'll need a region free player.

Producto en muy buen estado. La serie es europea, con un estilo personal pero de muy buena calidad y el vendedor estupendo. Como siempre, venta rápida, embalaje perfecto y todo en perfectas condiciones.

Prima del clamoroso successo di The Walking Dead (quanto meno all'estero) questa mini serie tv britannica (praticamente un film di due ore diviso in 5 puntate) ha osato dissacrare (o sarebbe meglio dire "maciullare") il mito dei reality show con una ferocia inaudita.Un gruppo di zombi famelici invade il set del Grande Fratello, prima divorando tutto ciò che gli gira intorno ed infine entrando nella casa, dove i protagonisti continuano tranquillamente a recitare il loro copione mentre il mondo fuori non esiste più.Se trovate The Walking Dead estremo qui si va addirittura oltre, anche troppo oltre, ed infatti la serie è diventata solo un cult per appassionati e non ha avuto sequel (peraltro difficilmente realizzabili considerato il finale...).Se nella seconda parte si scivola nel classico film apocalittico sugli zombie (con una violenza però davvero estrema per un prodotto destinato alla televisione), nella prima parte domina la satira grottesca e la scorrettezza politica: talmente squallidi ed imbecilli i personaggi che girano dentro ed intorno al reality da indurre lo spettatore ad immedesimarsi negli zombi, autentici "angeli" sterminatori.Persino i film di Romero impallidiscono a confronto.Ovviamente in Italia la serie è arrivata solo via web e per vederla con il doppiaggio italiano dovrete necessariamente scaricarla su qualche sito Torrent.Questa è l'edizione inglese, con lingua e sottotitoli solo in inglese, e la speranza della pubblicazione di un'edizione italiana è una chimera (diciamocelo: anche per colpa della "imbecillità" del pubblico italiano che non acquisterebbe mai un simile prodotto).Un cult destinato a rimanere tale per sempre

2008年10月に、イギリスのチャンネルE4と言うテレビ局で放映されたゾンビ・ホラードラマ。全5話、141分を収録。エクストラ58分（出演者、スタッフ、原作者のインタヴュー、未公開映像、SFXのメイキング）字幕は英語のみ （※イギリスの輸入盤の仕様です。）2011年に購入したGREEN HOUSE ブルーレイディスクプレーヤー ブラック GHV-BD100Kにて、問題なく再生出来ました。事の始まりは、ビッグブラザーと言うリアリティー・ショウの出演者（スタッフかな？）が車で撮影場所に向かう途中、事故を起こした車を発見し、様子を見に行ったドライヴァーが、狂人（感染者）に首を噛まれ出血多量状態で撮影場所に向かうのだが、そこからゾンビパニックが始まり。。。と言った内容ですが、肝心のゾンビはイギリス製なので、ダニー・ボイル式の疾走ゾンビです。英語字幕しかないので登場人物のセリフを追うので手一杯ですが、会話の内容は何となくわかると思います。（笑）観て頂くと分かりますが、主人公グループに途中から合流するテレビ局のプロデューサーが胸糞悪くて最高です！折角色んなトラブルを解決して阿吽の呼吸、鉄壁のチームワークが出来つつあったグループを最終的にズタズタにしていく過程が、ロメロ式の人間関係崩壊に倣っていて微笑ましくさえあります。途中でナイト・オブ・ザ・リヴィング・デッドのセリフなんかも出て来ますし。そして最大の見せ場は死霊のえじきのあの名シーンを彷彿とさせる人体損壊描写です。（涙ぐましい努力です笑）メイキングでも死霊のえじきへのオマージュだと、メイクアップアーティストも言ってました。かの、スティーブン・キングが2009年に見た最高の10本に選出していました。ゴア描写がキツイので日本では放映出来ないのではないかと思われます。よくテレビで放映出来たなーと思います。（放映時間は22時以降でしたが）さすが紳士的変態の多いイギリスだなと。（笑）

Imaginez un instant qu'une chaine comme M6 décide de tourner et de diffuser en prime time, chaque soir de la semaine d'Halloween, un téléfilm 'maison' de Zombie en utilisant ses propres présentateurs et autres guest stars..Imaginez en plus que cette mini série se révèle être un pur chef d'oeuvre de genre, avec du vrai gore et tout et tout...C'est ce qui est arrivé aux téléspectateurs de channel 4 au Royaume Uni !Le résultat est détonnant !Déjà, le pitch de départ est excellent : L'angleterre est totalement envahie par une "épidémie" de zombies.. Les seuls humains à ne pas être au courant, car totalement isolés du monde, sont les participants de Loft Story ! Plutôt original, non ?Alors oui, passé l'excitation de ce pitch, on craint la mauvaise série B, voire Z... mais non.. loin de là.. Des vrais personnages avec des vraies personnalités (Mention spéciale à l'odieux directeur d'antenne tout bonnement excellent, à Pipa la blondasse avec 2 de QI, à Gollum, etc.. ), des vraies séquences d'attaque de zombie particulièrement réussies (Largement au niveau d'un bon film cinéma), du suspense, de la tension, de l'humour..A cela se rajoute un petit coté que ne renierait pas Romero, montrant la fascination des gens pour la télévision qui remplace progressivement le culte auprès des masses. Une TV qui s'auto-critique de fort belle manière.Bref, tout y est et ca se regarde d'une seule traite (la série est courte, ca se termine en 2h ou presque, de memoire : 1 pilote de 40 minutes + 5 episodes de 20min).Coté Bonus : Les petits making of sont sympas.Attention pour les non anglophiles : DVD en anglais (sous titré anglais) uniquement. Avec un ptit bug sur les sous titres (du moins sur ma platine DVD : même sélectionnés, Ils ne deviennent visibles qu'après un petit retour arrière de quelques secondes qu'on doit faire juste une fois au debut de chaque episode, apres ca ils apparaissent normalement. Bon, un détail, rien qui ne gêne vraiment le visionnage... Et si ca se trouve, c'est que sur mon lecteur.Donc, tout ca pour dire : si vous aimez les films de Zombies et que l'anglais ne vous rebute pas trop : FONCEZ !!!Et pour les autres, Foncez quand meme ! Ca vous fera un bon exercice ;)Je l'ai déjà regardé 4 ou 5 fois et je m'en lasse pas ! Un vrai must have !
