A good read
It was an easy-to-read book and I enjoyed the story. A little different view of the Civil War since this young man was Amish and enlisted. Tells a lot about family life.

Beautiful, Deep Book
This was an unexpectedly deep book that was both enjoyable and made you think. It is a fictional account of a young Piker (conservative Mennonite) from Pennsylvania who joins the Union in a flurry of youthful emotion, but quickly learns about the horrors of war. It is a story of faith, honor and commitment to family. Highly recommended!

A True Story, and, War Isn't so Glorious!
A true story. A major take-away is that war's not so glorious. As a veteran, I'm thankful I never had bullets shot at me, nor was I called to fire any in anger. But I can still attest to the fact that it is NOT glorious! I'm looking forward to the days (who knows when) when we will beat our swords into plowshares at last. Aaron Stauffer didn't live long enough to see the arrival of such days, but maybe some of us will. Aaron did live long enough to learn just how unglorious war is, and to regret his part in it, according to this well-researched book.

Outstanding story, well-told
I was very touched by this story! It is woven around a cast of real characters and real events, but the dialog is fictional and plot details are inferred. Well researched, it brings alive 1860s life on the farm and the battlefield. The footnotes are especially interesting, as they further explain many of the characters, period practices, and historical events involved. The unique pathos of the story arises because Aaron was raised in a family and neighborhood of Old Order Mennonites, whose central tenet of belief is nonresistance to violence and evil. But Aaron rebels, joins the army, and is swept into events he never expected. The dramatic ending occurs after the War, when Aaron is back home on the farm, trying to make sense out of what he has been through. If you liked Red Badge of Courage, you'll like this even better.
