Don’t hesitate about purchasing this!
This was a gift flor my grandson’s graduation. It was beautiful and sturdy. Imagine my surprise when the engraver said he knew this piece and had worked on it before! He went on to say what a beautiful piece it was and easy to engrave. Thank you! My grandson loved it!

A wonderful gift for a great price! Well made and engravable!
It’s well made, pretty and solid. However, it’s not perfectly shiny and flawless. It kind of has a warn look to it, which isn’t terrible. It looks somewhat old and tarnished. And it has a few scratches and imperfections, but it suits this item well. Kind of gives it an old, family heirloom appearance. — I had planned on engraving the front, back, and inside. However, the back has a little dot indentation in the middle, and the engraver said they couldn’t do the back because it might catch on their machine. A skilled engraver at a jewelry store could probably work around that, however. But I needed it done last minute, and my only option was to have it done at “Things Remembered,” which I do not recommend. It cost $50 to have it engraved there, and I was limited to 5 lines, 12 letters/spaces per line. A jeweler probably could have done a better job for a better price. But I definitely do recommend this compass. It was the perfect gift, and will last forever.

Great quality
This compass was an anniversary gift for my boyfriend and he loves it. It takes a second for the needle to settle but it is accurate. We do a lot of camping/hiking and this durable metal compass will be perfect for our next trip.

Honest, sturdy, simple compass!
Fleeing from leaking liquid filled compasses, I've been looking at dry compasses. For not very much money, I thought I'd take a chance on this one.The needle enthusiastically points to magnetic north, if the swings bother you just tip the compass mid-swing to null the needle quickly. Having said that, there's not much more to say about the action of any compass. But we need to look at how that needle is housed and supported in it's function. This compass has a "snubber" , a little arm that lifts the needle free of it's pivot point to prevent damage while it's being carried. ( important for long compass life ) The brass case has been beautifully made, thick, strong and very protective. No kidding, I've had to force myself to quit playing with it, it's so pleasurable to handle something so well made. The compass rose is in keeping with the rest of the compass, perhaps more beautiful than needful but still nice to look at.No adjustment for declination, no way to "shoot" an azimuth. Get out your old protractor and strike a line on the map for the magnetic north in your area to orient your map and your done. As far as azimuths, I've never shot one, or for that matter even wounded one.

Beautiful Simple Piece
I bought this compass for myself but it’s definitely giftable. It’s a beautiful simple compass that is just what I wanted. No fancy engraving. (Though I believe that is an option somewhere?) No excessive decoration. The accuracy is close and the case is lovely. The crafters send you a little note too that thank you for your purchase and if there’s any problems with the product you can contract them. I appreciated this a lot. There is also a lock that holds the needle down so it doesn’t shake or get damaged when you travel. Which I wasn’t sure how that worked and felt silly when I thought it was broken when I first opened it. All in all, I do love this compass. It’s very charming.

Much nicer than expected
After looking for the nicest vintage "pirate"-looking yet functional compass at the most affordable price that included a leather carrying pouch, this was the one I opted to buy. It's surprising how many are out there around the same price point, but the reviews of other compasses were not glowing. Most either had moldy pouches or needles that didn't actually point to the north. This compass functions well enough I'd trust it in the wild for gross navigation. It's well constructed and has a comforting heft to it. The pouch is actual leather and while new, still appears to be vintage. I really appreciate the unadorned compass case unlike the others that had phrases or poem excerpts I really wasn't interested in. This is well worth the low price!

Feels cheaply made
Feels cheaply made and I don't have a lot of faith it will hold up well under even normal use. Was going to be an anniversary gift but once I saw it I decided to go with something nicer.
