They are flat on one side and the spring is quite stiff but you can operate them one-handed. They have smooth edges so they don’t scratch or pull at fabric, or whatever else you decide to use them for. My wife is using them for sewing because, when she uses pins, she often tends to stab herself. These are also perfect for sewing seams on clothes that are knitted. You could also use them for hanging cards up at Christmas, clamping bags closed in the fridge, keeping slippery clothes on hangers, clipping documents together, and I’m sure there are dozens of uses we haven’t thought of yet.
