The Mirror Has Two Faces

As a pre-teen, I was never adequate: my comportment was wanting, my looks were drab and pudgy, and I thought everybody was gossiping about me. (Because I was raised hearing three criticisms often.) When I was 13-14, I had a new friend who helped me to overcome these defects. I became a new creature, for awhile. I identify much with Barbra Streisand's character in this movie, re the dynamic she has with her Mother, and Barbara's breakout persona.

Excellent casting, with an interesting storyline that we can all identify with. One of the rare movies you can watch with parents & not worry about someone getting offended ... I place it in category of "Moonstruck" or "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

There are few performers I’d every consider calling them by their proper names, but Ms. Streisand is one of them... my admiration for her acting, singing, and directing is clear and Mirror Has Two Faces is one of her best. When Ms. Streisand’s Rose meets the incomparable Jeff Bridge’s Gregory, sparks fly in a charming, fun, nerdy, academic, wonderful way and keep the fires burning throughout. Mirror has a premise less talented actors and directors would scorch, but these folks are top notch and turn characters into people you want to know and befriend.Come along as Rose, the intelligent, funny, and quirky professor, gets set up with Gregory, the dull but never without charm math professor sets out to find a sex-less companion. Her sister, Claire does the setting up and their meet-cute plays out over a couple scenes to keep the interest burning. It’s brilliant. Lauren Bacall’s Hannah makes you want to slap her and hug her - often at the same time. But she walks a line of love and control with Rose that many will recognize.The changes in their arcs are subtle, but palpable, sweet, but challenging. It’s a story I’ve watched time and again and never grow tired of. One of my favorite scenes reveals so much of who Rose is and what she wants out of life, a perfect scene for a writer to tell and show us, a perfect scene for an actor of Streisand’s caliber can knock out of the park (brilliant side note - she’s a huge baseball fan). In it, Rose lectures her university literature class on romance and love in historic literature - it’s brilliant. Why weren’t more of my many instructors like her? She’s who I aspire to be if I ever go into college teaching... this is a great movie and I’m glad to have it in our collection. Streisand and Bridges are an outstanding couple and the joy and chemistry they share carries us through on a wonderful journey through life and love.

I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand and this is one of her very best movies. Also love the rest of the cast...and a great ending! Give it a try!

I love this movie. It tells us all that there is someone out there for everyone and never give up. Jeff Bridges & Barbra Streisand are a perfect match in this romantic comedy. However, the cursing and coarse language might be offensive to some. I had forgotten that part of it. Sometimes a great movie can be ruined with coarse language. or one "f" word. It really wasn't necessary for the impact of the story. Kind of sullied it a bit, but still a fabulous movie that I will watch again. The ending makes me cry every time. I wish more reviews would comment on the language warning when there is one.
