An utterly depressing topic but another brilliantly-weaved and uplifting story.
For anyone who wasn't born when Yugoslavia imploded reading this book is a way to dip a toe into the subject and get a smidgen of the hatred and suspicion and fear that festers beneath the surface of what has previously been a functioning civilized and enlightened multi-faith society. Another masterful work that pulls no punches and yet does not seek to point any fingers. A third book that does not follow in the footsteps of its predecessors and makes it another stand-alone original. I'm onto Robicheaux for some New Iberian highjinx before Bandit Country beckons. I can't wait.

Good plot for our War Crime Champion Joe
Throughly enjoyed this book. Like the way the characters Joe & Jayne develop against a great story line. Andrew laid out the the story in the beginning and developed a great story in which Joe / Jayne pieced together and kept the reader entertained and guessing, which resulted in a good ending. This is the 2nd book in the series for Joe and each time our hero is developing, like the fact he also has flaws, the Afghan being a prequel, and look forward to the next adventure. Definitely recommended.

A great sequel
I was a bit worried about going out of my comfort zone into a different theatre of conflict but there was no need. Another well handled plot which was just enough to cope with. Great characters, exciting and interesting. Also lots of background and links for follow up afterwards. Looking forward to the next one. Back to more familiar territory!

Another excellent read from Andrew Turpin
The second book in the Joe Johnson series and the twists and turns in the story keep it alive, interesting and exciting. There is plenty of information about the location and the story has a real feeling of authenticity, quite scry really.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will be reading the next book in the series which I hear has just been released.

Page turning
I like the characters and the pace the author has put in with short and long chapters. I had an idea where the story was going, and I was pleasantly surprised when I wasn’t fully correct. The author is clearly maturing their style and characters in this series and that’s fine. I’ll have to wait for the next one now, which is the only regret I have about buying this book.

Very interesting and fast paced
This is the second of the Joe Johnson books (and the second one I have read) and I have very much enjoyed them both. I think I actually preferred this one, as I have never read any fiction based on the Yugoslav wars, but I am old enough to clearly remember them. The storyline is good with several threads and twists and I really like all the attention to detail that the author puts into his work. I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Excellent!
Fascinating reading of the horrendous tragedy of this conflicting novel form. I like Mr Turpin's writing, his plotting and his characters. Bring on number 3
