Looked everywhere for these in the City I live in with no success. Saw them on Amazon and they arrived very quickly and were just what the builder needed

I recently fitted some wall lights and discovered the old lamps had full-size inset electrical back-boxes behind them. Consequently, the replacement lights had to be fitted with very long screws to reach solid wall. Some reviewers commented that these plugs were a bit on the small side with a tendency to spin in an 8mm hole. I can understand this, as the profile of the plug is triangular in shape - hence the plug only has three small contact points. I drilled my hole at 7mm (not 8mm) and easily hammered it in. The plug didn't spin when I screwed in the lamp. These will come in very useful for special cases as they can be cut to any length. But, I'd drill the hole a bit smaller than required to be on the safe side.

Just what I wanted

My father had these back in the 1980's. And I have old stock. And these are of similar if not the same quality. I highly recommend these. The colours suggest the size (diameter) of hole to be drilled. Measure depth of the drilled hole. Measure the rawl plug and cut 3 to 4 mm short. Hammer plug into wall and trim if necessary. Not suitable for Hardwall, rockwall sheeting. I only recommend for brick, concrete block and concrete poured walls 🧱. If a screw in wood was enlarged, this would also qualify for a fix, just make sure you have a nice tight fit between the wood and plug. What I mean is, make the hole as small a diameter as possible and the plug a very tight fit.

I searched for “extra large plugs” and these came up. Unfortunately they are not even large, being slightly smaller than the standard brown plugs. The mention of it being possible to use for 10 or 12 size screws persuaded me to try them, but as others have reported, drilling an 8mm hole leaves them spinning when the screw is inserted. Such a shame as if they were slightly larger, they would be ideal.

I know you can buy proper plugs for plasterboard (dot-and-dab) walls, but these are perfect to cut to length and soo much cheaper!
