Good End to the Manga
After having bogged down with Arima-kun's back history concerning his parents and adoptive parents, Tsuda-sensei finally gets back to the good stuff that we love and brings back the main cast and the central supporting characters that we had come to love, but who'd been all but forgotten.Volume 21 begins with one last tale of Asaba-kun and a girl he befriends in his senior year in high school. Then, the story switches to Arima and Yukino telling their friends and family of her pregnancy, then the gang graduating from high school. The manga ends with a super-chapter that takes place 16-years in the future and shows what has happened with all the characters in the meantime.Yeah, Tsuda-sensei ends on a high note for sure. I loved bringing back the old gang (even if mostly they were just cameos). Having an aftermath chapter (70+ pages?) taking place 16-years in the future was a nice touch and the perfect way to wrap up the manga. Tsuda-sensei's commentaries and ending omake is a nice touch as well. Finally, there's TokoyoPop's adaptation of this final volume. For the majority of the series run, they've opted for a more domestic approach that removed the Japanese honorifics. However, this final volume has the honorifics included and that is a welcome thing for this reviewer.Bottom line: A long manga series, one that got bogged down for a while, but Tsuda-sensei breaks free and ends the manga on a high note.

Everyone Falls in Love
This series will always have a special place in my heart - it was one of the first ones that I collected as each volume came out, along with Rurouni Kenshin. The main reason I started reading it was I was very dissatisfied with the anime and the shoddy way in which it ended. Overall, I read the entire series 3 times, and I even have an autographed copy of volume 1 by the author which is one of my most treasured possessions. Eventually I decided this series is not a "keeper" though and sold off the remaining 20 volumes to make space on my bookshelf. The art throughout is nothing special - really pedestrian typical shoujo art, and the story is very contrived. The theme of this series is everyone falls in love. Typically the couples happened to know each other as young children, and then fell in love as adults (Yukino's parents, Tonami/Sakura), or they were kind of thrown together and fall in love anyway (Tsubasa/ Kazuma), or they engaged in some kind of awkward, uncomfortable teenager/adult relationship (Maho/Takashi). The worst of the "couplings" takes place in this final volume with Asaba. Ugh... all I can say is, it's not romantic, it just comes out creepy and wrong. Let's not forget how quickly Yukino and Souichiro fall in love (a variant on the "love at first sight" trope) and how quickly their relationship progresses. Everyone falls in love, but everyone falls in love in the most unrealistic way possible.I think most of the time, when you end up getting pregnant and having a baby as a teenager right out of high school, that pretty much messes up your life. Yet, no problem, Yukino can still overcome and achieve her goals. It doesn't show how, just that evidently she worked hard and her supportive cop husband also worked hard. She must have had very supportive parents who pretty much did everything for her while she studied up for medical school. And Maho seems to have no problem balancing career and marriage. I don't know how it is in Japan, but here in the US a neurosurgery residency alone is like 7 years! So when you add up college + med school + 7 year residency + maybe fellowship after, by that time you are one old lady who probably works 80-100 hours a week! And let's not forget Yukino's friend Awa who happens to be a genius writer even though she is only in high school. Apparently, everyone in this manga is a genius, super talented, and has no problem overcoming any obstacle. So, in the end, Kare Kano is just a fairy tale soap opera that jumps from one relationship to another. Each time I read this series I noticed more of the problems I was having with it. So, finally, after years on my shelf, I let it go.

A perfect ending...
The road to the end has been a long and arduous one. Through many twists and turns, through many dramas the reader has traveled. Not all of them are as satisfying as others, but most have been fun. In this final volume we see the reactions of everyone as the school year ends and we discover what everyone is going to do after they graduate. We also learn how everyone reacts to the young parent's pregnancy (some good, some bad, but all love it in the end).I really enjoyed this volume. This is one series I got really attatched to early on & was willing to complete it. It may not be for everyone, but it's worth it.

Wonderfully concluded
The last volume of this endearing series does not disappoint like a great song or dish that you savor until the end. The warm fuzzies linger after you finish the book. Soichiro and Yukino tell their friends all about the news of the coming baby. They all discuss their plans for the future and as always the emotions of all the characters highlight the story. The epilogue which takes place 16 years in the future is such a wonderful glimpse in how all the characters have grown. Masami is to be congratulated for this wonderful series.
