Bel-Ami (French Edition) (French) Paperback – December 13, 2017

This is a window onto French society during the second half of the 19th Century. The characters are very well defined and developed, as the plot is generated and evolves somewhat predictably, nonetheless keeping the reader engaged throughout the narrative. De Maupassant's ability to create characters for whom the reader feels either empathy, disdain, or disregard, is admirable for its prospective and literary balance. A very enjoyable read.

I thought Bel-Ami was fascinating and hard to put down. I'm not a native speaker of French but I didn't find it too difficult to read. I found the main character, Georges Duroy, quite despicable. He is a highly manipulative person and will do anything to get ahead. He shows no remorse. De Maupassant is an amazing writer and knows how to bring this character to life. I also found the setting of the story--Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century--quite interesting from a historical perspective. Guy de Maupassant is one of my favorite French authors and this book did not disappoint. I could read it again.

Great story. The movie by the same title does not render justice to the novel. If one does not know French, the book could be read in English translation. The author portrays a cast of fascinating characters. The protagonist is a scoundrel out to take advantage of anyone, and especially of women. And he ends up not only scot-free, but actually triumphant! Kudos to Maupassant for writing about the bitter reality of life.

Easy to read, lots of action, no long ponderous descriptions. At the same time, some fascinating characters. This is not a book I will easily forget, nor is Georges Du Roy a character I will ever forget!

Intriguing and interesting story - could not stop reading it. Would definitely recommend it. Language not too complicated to understand.
