D-Frag! Vol. 1

Do you also look at the cover and think to yourself that isn't that Alice from Touhou? Maybe it is just me, but I can't deny that was my initial reaction and the start of my curiousity. Naturally this manga is not about Touhou, but about taking the popular moe genre with cute girls and then just turning it all upside down. Even the author himself says he wanted to write something else, but his editor pushed him into making a story about cute girls.So what do you get in this manga? You get a wannabe gang of guys who are really bad at being bad guys. You also get a team of girls who follow the rules of moe and are cute, but have really unexpected personalities. The twists and jokes feel fresh, and even though it is all focused on being silly, it does not become childish.

Kazama Kenji wants to be a delinquent but unfortunately he is actually a nice guy who is forced to join the incredibly eccentric Games Development Club. The only sane man in the club, Kenji has to deal with his insane club mates and their competition against a rival club.'D-Frag!' (or 'D-Fragments!' as it is also known), is an incredibly zany comedy manga that may be a little light on plot but is big on laughs. This fist volume is a little short when compared to some other series but it is still very entertaining and very funny. Much of the comedy of the series revolves around Kenji's reactions to the insanity that surrounds him (in the manner of the Boke and Tsukkomi acts of Japanese comedy) and some liberal abuse of the fourth wall. The artwork of the series is good and although I have never been much of a fan of series switching super-deformed artwork and back in the past, I feel that it works well here and fits the insanity of the series perfectly. The English translation also seems relatively good, retaining some honorifics and using Japanese name order.The volume has a couple of funny bonus strips and a brief preview of the manga 'Hanagi: I Don't Have Many Friends'.'D-Frag!' probably isn't a series for everyone but personally it is one of my favourite comedy manga and is well worth a full five stars.

Como obra de comedia se lleva las de ganar, humor irreverente con un "straight man" generando los "punch lines" y parece que sólo saber hacer eso, pero no es nada malo, es, de hecho, lo que convierte esta obra en graciosa.

I was first introduced to D-Frag! by buying the anime and I was hooked with it. It has more of a comedy then a romantic basis and you can't help but laugh when watching it. Kenji Kazuma's comebacks (and his sister's) are extremely amusing. I wanted to by the books to see if there were any differences in comparison with the anime and I'm glad I did.. there was quite a bit of extra things that happened especially in Vol 4. So if you've watched the anime you definitely need to get the books so you can piece together more of the back story and even learn the identify better of some of the characters. The basis of the plot is Kenji get's roped (quite forcibly) into joining the game development club (temp.) by Roka where his life does quite the 180 at first but as time proceeds he accepts being part of the group but still has moments where he would enjoy being freed from the club.

Wonderful characters, funny story and great art-work. It's a wonderful fun read that engages you with the antics of the Game Creation Club (Provisional) with surprising twists.
