Fitz is about to discover the truth about the Fool's prophecy. Having been resurrected from his fatal tortures in Regal's dungeons, Fitz has once more foiled Regal's attempts to be rid of him. Now, back in his own body and after months of rehabilitation, Fitz begins the painful and slow process of learning the ways of a man again. Under the watchful eye of Burrich, old King Shrewd's Stable master, Fitz must learn to cast off the wild but carefree ways of the wolf and enter once more the human world: a world beset ever more viciously by the relentless Red Ship Raiders who are now left free to plunder any coastal town they please. But more immediately, a world in which he finds he is utterly alone. Regal has stripped the kingdom of its riches and retired to the inland city of Trade ford. Of Verity, on his quest to find the legendary Elderings, there has been no word, Molly, Kettricken and the Fool have all vanished. Unless Fitz can find Verity and help him in his quest, the Six Duchies will perish and there will be no safe place to live. Review: Book came in great condition - The book came in perfect condition. One of the things I like about the Farseer Trilogy is that our protagonist, Fitz, isn't a clear cut hero like many other fantasy characters. Fitz and others in the book are fallible and human. Whatever virtues Fitz has gained in his life, has come through many privations and struggles. This makes Fitz a uniquely relate-able character. This is a problem I have with Brandon Sanderson's (or Rothfuss' to be honest) novels is that the protagonists are basically superheroes. If I wanted super-heroes I would be reading Avengers comics. The story gets interesting as the Red Ship Raiders become more and more ruthless and the Six Duchies gear up for all out war. While Prince Verity sets off on a fatal quest and Regal is scheming up to become King. Fantastic book full of court intrigue, adventure and human qualities as well as some interesting new characters. It is a true coming of age story of a young boy growing up in a dangerous world. Reader beware, this is not High Fantasy like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Mistborn, Malazan or Stormbringer series. I would classify it alongside A Song of Ice and Fire series as softer fantasy where preternatural elements aren't a large aspect of the world but are still integral to the story.

Good, but meandering!
This is a good book...if you have the patience. It is at least 200 pages longer than necessary. I would have loved to have seen the mid portion of the book - travel through the mountains, for example - much more concise and add more to the end part which was, at least in my opinion, needlessly rushed. In the end, it was a relief that the book was over and that's not a good feeling considering the first two books were crisper.

Excellent climax to the Trilogy
This excellent novel is one of the best I’ve ever read. I’ll be as brief as I can. Any readers who’ve encountered my book reviews will know that, as a writer and editor of novels, I am very particular and discerning in what I choose to read. Much of what I attempt to read proves unpickupable rather than unputdownable; Robin Hobb is among the latter. It’s well written in the traditional and well-established style, not the one-word or verbless sentences that Sanderson somehow gets away with. This novel follows on from the second in the series and is similarly excellent, if anything a little better. Robin Hobb writes books for discerning adults with high standards based on life experience. Read them. The novel's climax is breathtakingly excellent, although I could have lived without so much melancholy after the denouement but that’s a measure of how much it moved a rather cynical reader. There were, however, a couple of secrets/mysteries designed to mislead and then surprise the reader. I found them readily identifiable, and events developed exactly as I expected. I write and edit myself so my mind is tuned to spot such things; maybe I’m just really clever or just a smart alec. I also believe the lead character was far too clever not to have spotted them himself. On the negative side, the descriptive passages of the narrative approached and then crossed the border of the verbose. In one instance, this consisted of nearly a whole chapter. This typically happens when a writer’s publisher or editor insists that longer is better. They then unwisely use more description as padding. This did impact my enjoyment of the novel but not enough to deduct a marking. I’ve started the next novel in the series, Ship of Magic, and it’s instantly unputdownable. I intend to read everything Robin has ever written.

The hype is real
Wow. What an ending to this masterfully written High Epic Fantasy Trilogy. I continued to be got off guard on several of the plot twists and as soon as I thought they couldn't possible put my Fitzy through anymore...well they did. I love the connection to Nighteyes - we are pack brother. Ugh it was so good, my heart broke and healed throughout. The magic system of the Wit and the Skill were really intriguing and I love that we still dont have all the details and very excited to see where this world goes. This is a dark tale and the concept of forging is so insidious. The ending has me asking so many questions. You definitely can see growth in the authors writing from book 1 to 3 and Assassin's Quest was my fav. This author really knows how to bring you into a character's world - the good, the bad, the raw. The hype is real. Will be a top read of 2026.
