Reliable and trustworthy
Needed a reliable trustworthy 40GB external HD, this is exactly that. I use it for storage only but very happy with it.

FAILED after 18 months use
Don't buy this. Really, don't buy this. It's unreliable and expensive.

Awesome Storage Solution
Delivery was fast (even though we were in the middle of lockdown due to Covid 19). The product is packaged professionally. This device works as described. It is a little noisy, however not to levels that should annoy anyone. During setup I encountered a very small complication (not a product fault). I called the number on the invoice and was guided through to setup completion. One thing I would like to see in a future software update in the ability to see BOTH drives and their content (when using the device in RAID1). Currently I have to hope that my content is in fact being stored on both devices, and have not been able to find a way to confirm this.

Good Product
if you buying raid, say you are buying 16GB its fine if you are using as a single drive if you are going to do the raid for back up you need double the capacity as 16gb will become 8 gb in raid. so be care full estimating your storage need. but good quality hardware.

It could be better
Time will show if the fame of superior reliability is deserving the premium price. While advertised for Windows and Apple standards it clearly favours the Apple, arriving pre-configured in this flavour, and the transition to the Windows requirements is rather shaky. The double software system (The Manager and the Toolkit) is not convincing.

DO NOT BUY FOR MAC
Just spent over an hour on Lacie Tech support, could not get Lacie Toolkit to even open.

Partiamo dell'estetica...

I've bought this raid drive to replace my QNAP nas which I didn't like at all as a photographer. I just wanted a drive to access all my photos and the nas was full of other garbage apps which made it a mess for me. So I've decided to once again go for a DAS (direct attached storage) and went for this drive. While I'm okey with its speed (not editing 4k videos from it), the thing that bothered me the most was the very slow wake up times and the readout of the folder contents, especially the ones containing a lot of files. It takes somethimes more than 3-4 seconds to display a folder contents, sometimes even more. I still have it but just use it as a backup drive, not connected to my mac anymore. Went back to a NAS, this time the Ubiquiti UNAS Pro which I love.

I bought two of the LaCie 2big RAID 40TB with the wide-eyed optimism of a fool headed into the desert with a half-charged flashlight, expecting some gleaming monument of professional engineering. Instead, what I unboxed was a forty-terabyte paperweight — a sulking, malfunctioning steel brick masquerading as “reliable storage.” From the moment I plugged it in, the thing behaved like a drunk buffalo on roller skates: refusing to initialize, disconnecting at random, and collapsing under the weight of its own marketing hype. This wasn’t a hard drive. This was a $1,500 anxiety generator with a power cable. And then came customer support — the great Seagate help desk, a place where sanity goes to die. Their responses were a parade of canned nonsense, each message written like it was assembled by a committee of malfunctioning robots. Every time I explained the problem, they fired back with the same dead-eyed instructions as if I hadn’t already tried them. Hours of my life vanished into this bizarre correspondence, and the final verdict from their digital oracle was: “No refunds. Only replacement.” A replacement? For something that never worked in the first place? At this price point, refusing a refund is not just bad business — it’s corporate madness, the kind Hunter S. Thompson warned us about. So I turned to Amazon, hoping for salvation. Wrong again. They washed their hands of it immediately, claiming the responsibility lay with LaCie/Seagate. No help, no sympathy, just a polite shrug and a reminder that I would be paying the shipping bill to return this monstrous, defective contraption. Imagine hauling a forty-terabyte corpse to the post office because two massive companies couldn’t be bothered to stand behind the garbage they sold you. In the end, the story is simple: if you spend this kind of money, you deserve a machine that works, and a company that won’t treat you like a deranged troublemaker for expecting basic functionality. LaCie/Seagate delivers neither. No refunds, no accountability, and no respect for the people who keep them in business. Final verdict: stay far, far away. Buy from literally any brand that hasn’t given up on its customers. This isn’t storage — it’s a trap.

I was in the middle of editing an important project when I started to have some technical issues that turned out to be a problem with some drives that I probably should have replaced a year ago. I needed a new drive urgently and checked what was available on Amazon, plus delivery times. I found this 36tb drive for a very good price, which whilst it was not in my budget, I considered it to be worth stretching for, plus it could be delivered in 24 hours. Decision made and it actually arrived 21 hours after ordering it. Project situation was saved and despite the hiccup with my existing drive, it was now full steam ahead! Great service, really great raid drive setup, and once again I had a smile on my face and a real sense of relief.
